I though I knew immediately what the problem was when I went to downshift while pulling onto the off ramp of a rest area. I figured the clutch linkage died. But after idling while I called a local dealer to see if they had one in stock I was pleasantly surprised to find the clutch was working again. Since the dealer didn't have one I kept heading east. This time on the off ramp to a truck stop, no clutch disengage again. With some cussing a gear grinding I made my way to the pumps. Now I'm thinking pilot bearing. After fueling I started it up and no disengage, but if I started it in 1st gear and kept the clutch pedal depressed the truck didn't budge until I let the pedal out some. :confused: I am now in the parking lot, and am at a loss. If the truck sits still, idleing or shut off, for about 15 minutes the clutch works. After driving it doesn't work. I have never had a pilot bearing fail, so this is a new one. Pilot bearing or something inside the G56. Clutch linkage, pilot bearing, clutch, and PP have approx 61k miles on them.

Has clutch resiviour fluid level changed? Clutch pedal feels normal?

If I was in your shoes I'd pull the clutch slave and find someone to depress clutch pedal while you observe the movement of the rod at the slave to verify a direct 1-1 correlation between the pedal/slave.

Sorry, I disagree with this diagnostic technique, may cause s/c piston to pop out.

PM sent to Games.

Reservoir is full to the brim. I forgot to mention that I tried "pumping up" the clutch. That worked when I the last clutch linkage failed, not this time.

OK, I am shed of the trailer I had, another driver came to my rescue. No problem getting it to the motel down the street. Shut it off, registered, got in, put it in reverse and started it up. Away I went backward with the pedal down:eek: Popped it into nuetral, then shifted into 2nd with no real effort and drove to my room. I am pretty sure the pilot bearing is about seized. The question is should I try the 800 to 900 mile trip home. Mostly freeway so perhaps I can put it in 6th, crank it up and cross my fingers. It is really cold and nasty here in TN. :{

NOOOOOOOOO!!!!!

It will break the slave. Been there, done that (accident).

Pilot, or the clutch is worn out. Could still be the slave/master (heat/cold causes fun things to happen)

Gary,

I'd drive it home. Just use the technique you are using now; push it out of gear while you're rolling each time you are forced to stop, shut it off, then start it in gear.

What choices do you really have? You can't drop a heavy truck transmission in a parking lot and it wouldn't be wise to pay some "mechanic" who specializes in changing brake rotors to r&r it for you. Perhaps you can announce where you are and be lucky enough to be near a TDR member with a shop and tools.

Gary,

I found 10 listings for Fairview TN, don't know where you are. If you are near Dickson TN call Joe Underwood, Underwood Tire 615-446-3393. Joe is a diesel guy, IIRC member of the the famous Mid TN. I have been to his shop.

Joe and his shop knows diesels.

Joe is in the travelers companion. On my way to his shop now.

My first instinct was right, the linkage failed. I am now in a motel waiting for the latest snow storm to pass:mad: I appreciate everyones' input.
