Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) 97 just died

Without warning my truck just lost power, smoked and died. It chugged long enough for me to get it off the road. I could smell something burning (plastic or rubber) I looked under the hood and everything seemed OK. The smell was strongest in the cab. The truck turns over, but the plug light does not come on when I turn the ignition on. Any thoughts on what happened?

Could be the shutdown solenoid. I have had then die before. . But never had any smoke.



Wire it up and see if it starts.

I know just enough to get me in trouble. Is the shutdown selenoid one of those on the drivers side fender? Just wire the terminals together and bypass it? since the smell was stronger in the cab than under the hood, I plan to check the fuse box in the morning and see if it looks melted.

It could be the starter contacts stuck. That would burn up the fuel solenoid. Sticking starter contacts is a common failure. Take a look at this thread:

The fuel solenoid is on the fender side of the back of the injection pump. It pulls on a lever on the injection pump to turn on or off fuel. When you look down at it you will see a small round can looking thing.

Mine smoked like a chimney when it burnt up... I just strapped it up and drive home, changed it out the next day.
