My shop manual tells me the coolant temp sender unit is a 2 wire unit located directly behind the fuel filter which needs to be removed to access the sending unit. The sending unit on my truck is a 1 wire unit that is located towards the rear of the engine but not on the back end but farther back from the fuel filter. I can put a socket and extension on it with out having to remove anything. Any ideas what is going on here? Is this a early 97 model engine? It is reading lower than it should is what brought all this on, its time to fix it.

Before putting in a new one, use the socket to turn the sending unit back and forth some. It may not be making a good contact.

Only one wire for the coolant temp sending unit on a '97. Make sure the socket doesn't get cocked sideways when removing it, if you will be reusing it. I ruined the connector on mine. Used a flex handled ratchet.

I tried loosening and tightening about a 1/2 turn and it didnt seem to make any difference. I will try that again. Its funny why the 97 shop manual shows a 2 wire unit, oh well somebody didnt get the word when it was printed.
