I have a 97 auto 5. 9. When I pull out for the first time after starting the truck, the transmissions shift to second takes a while. Maybe I will have to go some 50-100 yds before it upshifts. After that the trans works fine until I kill the engine again. I dont know whats wrong, maybe you all can help. Thanks Kyle

My 96 did that at about 75k they had to rebuild the transmission, some sort of solenoid. My new truck did it starting at 35k then we found it and fixed it at 47k it was the valve body( I know my 03 is a 48RE but I think it still applies. Firt one was a total rebuild out of truck as it had worn the clutches by not shifting right 03 was just the valve body so did in truck.

Try idleing in neutral for about 30secs before taking off. This allows the trans to flow fluid and build some pressure.

good luck

It does it whether its cold or hot. It only happens when I turn the engine off and when I restart it will happen again. I did change out the filter and transmission fluid and it still happens. Thanks Kyle

Maybe the little ball valve that keeps fluid from draining back to the transmission when parked is stuck open?

A friends 99' did something similar. It was a sensor of some sort. I remember it being a cheap fix. He had a trusted local transmission shop fix it.

sounds like a fluid pressure problem... ie the line pressure might need turning up, the other fellas sound like there on the right track. Another thing you might look into is the second gear band, mine was loose on my 94 and took about the lenght of time your stating to shift. You should to get it tightened and see if it works... cheapest fix.

I had the same problem in my 96. It can be the sensor in the overdrive unit. Driver side between the trans and transfer case. Looking from the back at the transfer case it would be about the 10:00 position. In my case the wire had broke and it was not picking up the sensor signal. Try that I would almost bet thats what it is.

Is that the check valve located by the transmission cooler

It's where the line runs into the cooler (I think that's what it is) on the passenger side of the engine. There is a short piece of flexible tubing between the hard line and the cooler. I took mine out, but I didn't get the same problems that you mention. It did take a few seconds longer to build up pressure.

I checked my wires and all seems alright. Did you have the same 1-2 shift problems or was the shifting irractic in other gears? Thanks for the suggestion - Kyle

Same 1-2 shift I either had to back off the throttle or waite and eventualy it would shift. Hot or cold it was the same every time the key was shut off. I think I have a sensor you could try if you cant get it. I think it is real hard on the transmission while its like this. The other thing it could be a throttle position sensor.

govenor presure selonoid and presure switch will do the same thing, you should have the updated manual valve put in to this allows the trans fluid to flow in park and nuetral this goes for you guys with the 05s p. s i'm a transmission man
