my friend's 97 wont start. we just put a new fuel shutoff solenoid but it still wont start unless you push the rod up on the solenoid manually

Sounds like you needed the fuel solenoid relay rather than the whole solenoid. . I believe Autozone or the like has these, shouldnt be too costly. . It is located on the firewall above the solenoid, next to another relay.

good luck. .

When you crank engine is rod going up at all ?

If it is going up but not all the way it mite need adjustment.

If it is not moving then relay or wiring.

we got the new one on but you still have to help it up. once it is up it is stuck like it should be and it disengages properly also

If the solenoid holds up when pushed manually then it is almost always the relay. If it won't hold then it is the solenoid. You have a new solenoid so it's got to be the relay.

check the 3wire conn. right at the shut down sol. check both sides each wire I cant remember the colors and my wife has it right now . one is a grnd. one is a pull up -start the other is run I believe your looking for the biggest wire awg #12 or 10. CAUTION DO NOT LEAN ON THE KEY TO FIND THE RIGHT WIRE,THE SOLENOID WILL BLOW UP. The conn . is a dodge deal and as much as I dislike fords their conn. for the same sol. is much more available and a better design. I can prob. get the part #s for you if this conn. is the problem. A hand operated is much more reliable. A spring holding it open works in a pinch except you have to get out and open the hood to shut her down, have a nice day ,Ray
