Did the 98 24 valves, which I guess were the first, have a bad rep, or were they more reliable then the later 24 valves? I know all generations had their share of problems, were any specifically in the 98 24 valves?
Yah, I've been educating myself on the block 53 problem. So to correct this if it cracks I would need a new block and have everything transfered to the new one? Happen often? Well I guess it's just like the 12v KDPs and fifth gear nuts.
There have been attempts to repair the crack, but replacement is the best way to fix it. I don't think you can say how often. It is often enough that it is something to think about.
5th gear nuts can still be a problem on the 24v trucks too.
'98. 5 24v's can have the 53 block and the VP44's on the early build trucks missed a debur step in the manufacture of them which could cause premature failure - but any trucks on the road now should be WELL past the point that that could be an issue. Outside of those they have the same lift pump issues as all of the VP44 trucks. My '98. 5 has close to 200,000 miles on it now and I'm still on the original VP44 and I've had a pump wire box on it since 28,000 miles. I did go through quite a few lift pumps until I went with a carter pusher pump setup in addition to the engine mounted pump.
Just some info,Ive seen a dowel pin come out on a 2000 year 24 vlv... as for the VP's, I believe its all down to fuel press and volume... . Just my . 02 Jeremy
