Archived 98.5 24v will not start

I have a 98. 5 3500 24v dully. In Dec. 08 I changed the fuel pump. I replaced the injector pump at the end of Feb. 09. This Jan. I changed both fenders on the truck. About 3 days after I got my truck back it ran great.

I stopped at a store, when I tried to start my truck it would not start. It started after I sprayed it and jumped it off with an f350. The check eng. light came on when I was driving home.

The next day it started right up. After driving for about one hour I parked for two hours, when I tried to start the truck all it would do is turn over. I tried to jump it off and spraying it, nothing.

I had a friend of a friend who’s a mechanic for a local dodge dealership tests it and he said that it was the injector pump. (There was a break between the ECU and the Elect. . Module. I ask him if changing the fenders and discontenting & reinstalling the elect. Fuses and hardware on the fender could cause this problem, he advised it couldn’t.

I tried to jump it off one more time to put my truck on a trailer. It started right up. It was running great. We let it run for about 15 minutes. When I turned on the head lights the truck stopped running like I turned off the key. We restarted the truck it was running great. Turned on the headlight and it stopped again. Would not start after that. I had to get a wrecker to haul the truck

I sent the Injector pump back to Pensacola Fuel Injector, as it was just under a year that I had bought it. They advised me that they sent it to Bosh to have it tested. I was informed that injector pumped check out ok. I ask the guy on the phone if changing my fenders could be the problem. He advised me it could be that a ground wire it’s connected or a hot wire isn’t connected tight enough.

He advised me that it could indeed be what is causing my problems. The mechanic said that he will put it back on and see what happens. But that everything points to the injector pump.

Any help would be appreciated.

Go to blue chip diesel's website and you should be able to find steps for troubleshooting the injection pump. Somewhere it will tell you what two pins on the injection pump to power and ground that will start the truck and idle only to tell you if the pump is working.

2 times in a row is a pattern. Headlights and Injection pump are not in the same circuit.

Check grounds at the batteries, fenders and firewall.

Check battery positive at the batteries, alt, and PDC.

Check wire harnesses running along the drivers fender for pinch, kinks, and rub through.

Stop using the either bunny!

Check connections for the ECM and PCM.

You can blow the damn intake manifold off these things using ether. DO NOT DO IT!!

I would add extra ground wires directly from the batteries to the body, frame and engine block. The more grounds, the better!

I had similar experiences a couple of months ago with engine dying and restarting. I found that a long crank would not start the engine,but when turned over a couple of times after maybe 5 or 6 tries it would start with the check engine light staying on. Then the truck sat for a couple of months... when I went to restart it would not. I had trouble codes of 1693, 1698, & 1689. I checked wiring, connections, etc. , still no start. I changed injection system relay... truck fired up & has been running good ever since.

Thanks, I will stop using either, I should get the injection pump back today. Once he puts it back on I will use these suggestions to try and run down the problem. I will post what I find.

Up date, The mechanic said he reinstalled the injector pump and it still didn't work, he advised me that he installed it on another 98 truck and it didn't work on that truck. He installed a new injector pump, he also changed the pick up pump, and had the started rebuild as well. The truck still wouldn't run.

He then advised me that I have a bad wiring harness. and it would cost $1,600. 00 to fix it.

I picked up my truck and brought it to some one else. This mechanic worked on it today, he got it sarted up, and said it was running ruff & had a lot of white smoke.

What should our next step?
