Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) 98.5 Connector Tubes???????

I have another thread on here pertaining to an upcoming injector swap in my 98. 5, 24 valve. Member SAronson replied that I need to change the connector tubes as well since I have a 98. 5 can someone elaborate on this what is the reason?? Was it a design change or just precautionary because it is the oldest of the 24 valves or what. Also if it is neccessary can someone provide the correct Cummins part# that I need, or do I just walk in a ask for the connector tubes for a 99 and newer ISB engine. I have a Cummins distributer nearby but the counter guys get kind of fussy when having to look up parts for the Dodge pick-ups. Thanks

Some of the early 98. 5 24v's had different connetor tubes. You need to check your engine serial #. If the engine serial # is prior to 56462592. then you may need the update tubes. This was a TSB on the trucks so it may have been done already at the dealer during warranty period. TSB#14-01-98 REV. A

The cummins part# is 3944833, if you need the tubes you need to get the orings also.

Thanks for the info aircop, I'll call the dealer tomorrow to see if they have any record of it being done. I bought the truck as a lease return with 42k on it so I know it wasn't done under my ownership, but I talked with the previous owner before I bought it and he did mention that they had changed something on the fuel system under warranty when he had it. So it's not the injectors that were different only the tubes? If I get new nozzles put on my old injectors and decide to put them back in someday, would I need the old tubes to go with those injectors or the new tubes work either way?

erobb, I doubt the TSB was carried out unless an owner complained. When I replaced the injector tubes on my '98. 5 it idled more smoothly.

The new injector tubes are reusable and work with any injector you want to put in your truck, old or new or original or not. Your original tubes (if you're under SN 3944833) are not "reusable" . . . supposedly if you pull them to replace injectors you're to put new tubes in anyway.

Well I found this thread and have never heard anything about it. Checked my serial# and sure enough its affected- so I pulled a tube today and I need to replace em. Off to cummis and $154. 19 worth of parts, all taken care of.

Good for you NDaniels. Notice any change in engine sound or smoothness? Out of curiousity what is your engine build date? My '98 24V was built 12-23-97 (the date is on the same data plate as the SN).

Look in the phone book for a Bosch authorized service center... we used to buy them for about $15 each.

Believe it or not my tubes were replaced under the TSB. I called the dealer where I bought the truck, and where the previous owner had it serviced and they assured me it had been done, when the previous guy owned it. they said if I wanted to swing by they'd give me a copy of the work order for my records. Installed the Pensacola Diesel +50 HP injectors today, re-used the tubes and O-rings NO problems, No leaks. The truck does idle better and sound a little different, but must be the new injectors in my case. I'm excited to see if my economy improves, the truck doesn't feel a whole lot stronger by the seat of the pants, but definately smoother:

how would you know if they were leaking?

I would assume if they are leaking you would see fuel seeping out between the 19mm nut and the head casting. After reading other threads on here about injector removal/install some folks expressed frustration over getting the leaks to stop, also you leave a couple of those nuts loose to get air out of the system when cranking at first. I don't believe the fuel could go anywhere else if they do leak. Maybe I'm wrong on this. Anyway I didn't have any problems with external. visible leaks. Hope this explains what I meant better.

Engine mfg date: 2/19/98. No, I didn't notice any change- mine runs really rough all the time, except when cold, due to the pump.

Man, I could have saved 5. 90 per tube if I drove 40min north:-laf unless there is a bosch dealer closer that I don't know about?
