Need help fast. . I have a 98. 5 Oo. five speed with 4. 10 gears. I recently was coming in from a 5 hour trip, all interstate. When I stopped at a light I could not get the truck to go in gear. I shut it down, put it in second, started again, and took off. Made it home fine, but now I can't get it in any gear!!!! Any help would be appreciated. 118,500 miles. New clutch installed around 85,000.

Edge chip and 4" exhaust and strong as a bull!!!!

Can you shift through gears while the truck is off? Or can you just not shift at all no matter what? Are you just in neutral?

I had a problem with the throwout bearing and the clutch would grab even when engaged. This made it hard to start and stop but with the truck off I could shift and once i got moving I could shift. The same symptoms might come from something wrong in hydraulics.

If the transmission just won't go into gear even when stopped then you'll need to look into the transmission. Can't help much there yet since I just opted to get a rebuilt from Standard Trans and not rebuild myself.

It got stuck in first gear, and kept working at it and finally got it in neutral. Now I can't seem to get it in any gear... Talked to a mechanic today and he said sounds like I need a new transmission!!!! I just can't believe that with only 118,000. Any help appreciated!!!!

Well, we could hope that it is just the clutch pressure plate, throwout bearing, or clutch arm inside the bell housing.

Another option is to drain the fluid and pull the access covers off and try to see if anything is "out of place". Chunks of metal, or gears laying on the bottom would be bad.

I would think with the truck off and it still stuck its probably the transmission. I'd call Standard Trans and talk to one their techs and see what they think. But yeah as something to do yourself you can definately open it up and see if you see anything.

Don't forget you'll need to get more fluid too and its not all that cheap and sometimes hard to find.

Good luck.

Thanks for the info. What about the slave cylinder? Does anyone know where it's located & if it's a do it yourself job??? Again, thanks for your help!!!

The slave cylinder is on the drivers side of the transmission. Just follow the line from the reservoir down. As far as I know all the second gens are not serviceable, it is a replacement only item.

I plan on changing the entire slave assembly. Does anyone know the part # from Dodge on this? Also, with the engine not running, I can get it in every gear EXCEPT 2nd???? Anyone heard of this???

Check with Cummins, NAPA, AutoZone, and any other auto parts shop B E F O R E the stea... dealer. You can and will find the same or better part for a lower price than DC.

Thanks for the info. From reading some of the other posts, it seemed as though DC was the place to get the whole assembly... Thanks a bunch$$$. After examining closer today, I found "oil" around the oil pan and transmission. I've had a leaky pan for a couple of months but clean it regularly to keep an eye on it. . I hope it's nothing to do with the transmission!!!

I had the same deal happen. Lost the oil, and the first thing you notice is it won't shift. Check the oil in the trans. I bet it is gone.
