my friend has an 05 ram 3500 with the engine blown(zero maintainence) and i have a 1998 24 valvetruck that is too rusty but powertrain is excellent,

can he put my engine on his transmission? can he put my engine&transmission plus t-case in his truck? can i help him out at all?both trucks 4x4 and manual trans.

First question is do you have to smog test? Of so the '98 engine will have to be brought up to '05 standards which I don't think the '98 can be. You might be able to take the CR injection system (including the head) and put it on the '98 block but it will be nosier then the original '05 do to slight block redesign.

If it has to pass emissions it never will with the engine swap.

If he ever wants to trade or sell it, it won't be worth much.

The swap will entail a LOT of work and trying to match older electronics to newer system. It may never work right without expensive equipment and an electrical engineer.

It can be done but the results range from so-so to a nightmare to operate. Given the effort and cost, he would be ahead to buy a used CR engine.

The front gear case and the bell housing adapter both have different bolt patterns on the 2003-up blocks compared to the older blocks. I don't know if the newer engine mount brackets will bolt to the old block. Thus, it is impractical to attempt to use the older block with new HPCR injection system. The old head isn't designed for the HPCR injection lines or injectors. If you retain the old VP44 injection system, you need the old truck-engine computer to run it, and would have to research all the wiring needed. As others noted, the swap isn't even close to practical, even if you don't care about emissions compliance.

Gregg, I did one of these 99 into a 04 for a friend of mine. I told him I would do the mechanical end but he would have to do the eletrical end. The mechanical end went very smooth... ... But then he spent almost as much as a new long block would have been trying to get the eletrical to work. Best advice, swap in a long block or rebuild the one he has.

thanks for that, i`ll tell him with confidence now. emmisions is not an issue here. but the electrical issues scare me. too bad, cause i wish i could have a 3rd gen with that good old loud clunkin 24 valve,i just love the sound of my engine. it doesn`t just start up like the 3rd gens it springs to life, like its eager to work and leaves no doubt that its a torqie diesel. imagine how great the 6. 7 would sound if it was the older technology engine!!!!!!!!!!
