Will some one out there tell me what to do to get a decent fuel Mileage. This old Man just got a 99 RAM Auto 3. 54 rear with 40K miles on it and i'm doin about 17 at 60-65. Radar Doctor tks Gang
My 99 4x4 3500 gets 17. 5 to 18. 5 at 70 on cruise depending on distance. The longer the drive the better the Fuel milage, and about 15 to 16. 5 in town and 11 to pulling 12,000 # of horses and trailer.
Change your fuel filter and air filter check intercooler rubber conections and have fuel lift pump presures checked. You can do all of this stuff your self.
I made a trip of about 500 miles on the last tank at 70 mph and averaged 21. 6 caculated by hand. That's empty with one rider and is about my avg when driving back and forth to work 50 miles a day, all interstate. Of course, RATTLINRAM is two wheeled impaired. & 34,000 trouble-free miles old.
With my 99 4x4 auto I get about 21 at 60-65 on longer trips. Going back and forth to work is about 40 miles each way and I am getting 18-19 with speeds varying from stopped to 75 MPH on the way. If you have a dually you are right in the ballpark as the others have said. If you have a 2500 4x4 you are a little low, and should be 3-4 mpg higher if you have a 4x2 2500. You can try all sorts of stuff to get the mileage up. One thing that will help your economy that you might not think of is to not baby it around. Accelerate briskly and coast to stops whenever possible. Also on mine the cruise control drops the economy by 1 to 1. 5 MPG. Hope this helps.
The number of times that the engine has to warm up has the most to do with mileage in my truck. If I am on a long trip I can get up to 23. 8 mpg if I keep it to 65. If I go 75 I get about 18 – 19 mpg. If I am going to work and back, a 14 mile trip, I get about 14 – 16. If I drive like a maniac to work and back, I get 11- 12. I think you are about right for an over-valved engine.
I just want to thank all you guys that responded to my Fuel Mileage problem. This 64 yr old man who (STOOD IN THE EAST) Thanks all of you. . RADAR DOCTOR IN KANSAS ... ... ... .
