I'll try to make this short and to the point. Blue/White smoke on start up. getting worse. Rough idle on start up (morning/cold). Dead pedal at highway cruising speeds originally, now anywhere above 30 mph it happens sporatically. Originally let it down shift and/or pumped pedal, now I turn the key backwards one spot, then back to on. Truck runs fine for awhile. Thought it was electrical/APPS related, did pcm reset, new batteries etc, no good.

Starting to think maybe it is VP$$. Had new LP installed approx. 8000 mi back because of dead pedal, didn't fix it.

Bought the truck at 208,000 in Jan. 05, As of today it has 223,xxx. (5/09). I do put alot of miles on a truck. Moderate loads, (I remodel homes).

At any rate I had the transmission flushed before I pulled a load to the beach this past weekend. Made it there and back fine (5. 5 hours each way). Today 5/9, transmission felt like it was slipping at anything above 30 mph. Cruised it home @2500 rpm without over drive @ 60 mph. Speed limit was 70. Redline @ 3500.

Questions: Does it sound like I need a new transmission and IP? Are there any other things that I can check first? transmission check valve make it slip?

No over heat lights, No check engine lights, and no codes given at all--so far.

Could it possibly be a lock-up problem? Wishful thinking.

I am not currently running any gauges, don't have any. Paid cash for the truck in Jan. and have put 4000. 00 just into routine maintenance, tires, hub assembly, etc... so far. I know I need them, I just can't afford them. right this minute. Any cost effective solutions out there?

Cost effective because I believe that I'm looking at another 5-8 grand to get everything fixed right now.

Any and all suggestions are welcome. You can leave your replies here and/or email me -- email address removed --

Thanks in advance :)

Since I've only really been around 12v engnies I can't really help there.

On the transmission, first thing that comes to mind would be, make sure the little spring on the throttle valve lever (assuming the trannys behind a 24v still uses that cable). If it doesn't and it controlled electronically, it could be related to your engine glitch. Other would be possibly needing a new governor pressure sensor and gov. press. regulator on the valvebody. They are all an easy fix, but the last 2 will cost around $100 a piece.

Have the bands been adjusted? When was the transmission oil changed? Was it the corrct fluid. If they put in Dexron/Mercron, instead of a ATF+3, it will slip and shutter easier. My stocker did that. It had the wrong fluid in it. Worked better after the correct stuff was put in.

you need to get your codes read. there are auto stores in the us that will read them for you. someone will chime in with who, sounds like vp44 is going south. good luck

I had the pcm reread by someone other than my local dealership and they came up with a p1693 and a p1682. VP44 IP and something in the trans filter I think. Good news for you guys around this area; Asheville Fleet service is very knowledgeable with these trucks. He knows something also about the IP. He says that there is a check valve on it that gets stuck open, but only when it's hot, thereby not allowing it to build pressure and creating a version of the " dead or soft " pedal. Also, he has someone in johnson city TN that rebuilds these pumps.

So now I'm hoping for the IP to only need a check valve, and the transmission to need a new/clean filter.

I'll keep the updates coming until I'm running again.

5/15-update. Transmission is shot. Trash in the pan includes plastic and metal. Apparently a filter got clogged-overheated the transmission and baked everything on "high" for a while. Nice. Anyway transmission repairs about 2500. 00 +/-. Still need to find out if the transmission could make a "dead/soft pedal" or if I can expect a new IP. Thanks. all inquiries welcome.

It sounds like you are close to Jim Anderson. He has given me a lot of good advise and may be able to give you some shop names in your area. If you are replacing the transmission, are you looking into a higher end rebuild similar to an ATS?

Jim Anderson, as in Anderson automotive? There are about four of them here. one is a Dodge dealer. That's who I started taking it to; before I was enlightened by the TDR's wisdom. ;) At any rate, I am having the stock transmission rebuilt. Will be completed by this Thursday. Then she goes back to Asheville fleet service to see if the IP is already shot or if the check valve can be replaced and solve the problem before it does go.

From my limited understanding, there is a check valve on the bosch vp44 injection pump that can stick. It only happens when it's hot though. If you rattle it while its cold you will here it move, and assume that it's working properly. Apparently it sticks wide open and doesn't allow it to build fuel pressure properly or something along these lines. This can lead to a dead / soft pedal at highway speeds. And I assume that it can not be good for the electronics in the pump.

If I am mistaken about anything in hee please correct me, so that we all know.
