Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) 99 2500, Converter possibly not coming out of lockup, any simple fixes?

A friend of mine has a 99 auto truck that all of a sudden started shifting very hard and when slowing down to a stop, the engine dies. I do not know very much about the automatics in these trucks and I do not know if this is a common problem. Everything to me points to the converter staying locked up. If this is the case, is this a common problem with a relatively easy fix?
