99 ? cure for binding rear parking brake

Hello,

I don't get much time to browse the TDR these days. I proudly keep up my membership for times like this.....



So, anyone have a good cure for my parking brake's binding up all the time?



I am not looking for a super expensive fix, just one that will be bulletproof in my nice corrosive New England environment.



I went to pull a large down'd tree out of the woods yesterday on a slight grade. I applied the parking brake, stepped out to hook up the chain and discovered the parking brake was no more (once again). Likely one of us did not realize the parking brake was stuck on and destroyed the pads again...



I once saw a setup that was designed to work off the back of the transfer case. I don't know if that would help but I have to find a sure fire cure that will not have to be dealt with again. . (like Joe D's clutch that continues to put up with my abuse from the hp toys !!)

ps: The green monster no longer actually gets driven every day. I run an 03 interceptor for the daily ride to work. This means the green monster gets a break but there is always that trade off for sitting idle...

IIRC, you're talking about a pinion brake.

My 99's parking brake works just dandy fine. OTOH, it gets disengaged/engaged twice daily as it's my daily driver.

The plastic coating on the break cable tends to wear off over time and allow the cable to fray in areas where the cable rubs inside the sleeve. I had this issue on a 97' F250 (and many other issues).

On my 02' I had the cable fray near the e-brake peddle and start sticking. I'm living in Texas now but I'm from Maine and I can see the salt causing corroision problems that could cause binding.

I am not sure if anyone makes a pinion brake for a truck Dana. With how well yours lasted throughout the nasty chemicals they put on your roads up there in the winter months I would probably just redo all the cable and rebuild the factory unit. Glad to see you still have the Green Monster... ... ... . Andy

I still love the green monster but it is getting tired. At least the increased blow by is helping the underside rust problem... The 99 still goes like hell and the engine will surely outlast the rotting rig around it...



But hey, my linex bed liner still looks new. . Should have done the whole entire truck in that stuff. .
