OK fellas,I need your infinite wisdom here. Today I went and drove a 1 ton 6spd HO. It looks like my '99, except it has two extra wheels! Both trucks are the same colors in and out. Believe it or not,my '99 w/ the auto feels just as strong. I've heard these 6 spds are hard to get a hold of. I'd really like to have a 1 ton with that HO,but my '99 feels like one of those strong ones, and I really love it. Is it worth the trade,or should I hold out for that crew cab?
thanx Big A

I have 6500 towing miles on my HO 6 speed one ton. And it just keeps running better and better. The first trip we took with it (loaded at about 19,500# cgvw) I thought what a dog compared to my BOMBED 5 speed splitter equipped 1995 3/4 ton. But as it gets more miles on it it seems to pick up a lot more power. My 95 did that too but this seems much more dramatic. In three words I LOVE IT!!!!!!!!! #ad

Big A:

I think you have to decide what you want and/or need more. Do you want/need a 6sp and a dually now? Do you tow enough to make it worthwhile?

Probably most importantly, can you trade out of the '99 without bending over? If so, then it may be worth a closer look. One way I see it, I won't touch the third-gen trucks until at least 2005 to give 'em time to work the bugs out of the new motor (anybody remember the first year or two of the ISB?) and deal with the new diesel emissions requirements. That's why I moved up from my '96 now instead of waiting.

So... decide what you want and need the most, and go from there.

Well guys, I've made up my mind. I'm keepin' the '99. Like I said before,I truly love this truck. I cant justify the extra money, for such a small amount of extra power. Thanx for the advice,I can always count on my brothers.

I agree with Big A. I thought I might like the 6-speed/HO Cummins. But after test driving two of them today, I feel my "99"/auto with minor mods was much stronger than the HO. After discussing potential trade I also decided that it would behove me to keep the ole "99. " For what they wanted to boot #ad
, I can finish bullet-proofing the auto, add the tow mirrors, a set of injectors and pay the majority of the 5ver off, and know I have many years of service left on the rig I have #ad
.

Im one of those who traded a 99 auto for the 01 6spd. The I could definetly tell the difference in power especially when towing my TT. Having the gear selection makes a lot of difference. IMHO. Ive pulled the same hills faster and its not even broke in yet. Im not a speed demon, especially when towing, but its always nice to have that extra power in case its needed. BTW,went from a 4x4 SWB to a 4x4 LWB as well.

Big A, same boat here. I'm looking at either a 2500 or a 3500 HO 6spd but really like my 99 auto. The difference between us is I'm not really towing anything. Mine is probably just an I want more than anything else. We are close on the numbers but it always make ya mad when the dealer doesn't give you what you think your trade is worth. I will no doubt keep what I got but the daydreaming is fun!! Regards Pete

Back in june I traded my '98 12 valve 2500 for this 2001 ETH/DEE 3500. My dealer gave me $2000. 00 over book price on the '98 and dropped several thousand off of the new one. Same payment with a year and a half added on. As much as I loved the 12 valve I love this 6 speed more! Powerwise this ETH is a ways behind(the other had a JRE stage 2, ect) but I think in the long run this truck will be way ahead! Just a prediction #ad
plus it rides great!

One of the local central TEXAS dealers told me the '96 thru '98 12 valves are selling at a premium, due to the problems(low power-low MPG) on the 24 valves. I had a chance to trade my 99 for a 97(basically same) and get $500 back.
Think I'll keep the '99.

Dont get me wrong fellas. The HO is a nice truck, but I think my '99 is also a great truck. I think those of us that have kept our '99s, are gonna be just as happy as the guys that went with the HO
