Archived 99 Trans Problem

99 5-speed manual. This is for a buddy. The trans upshifts good. The problem is downshifting. Must bring the rpms up to get into gear. Talked to Standard Trans in Ft. Worth. Said may be the throw out bearing sticking or the Slave/Master clutch is going out. Said tear it apart and look at it. :--) Any help? Thanks

Could be pedal cyl or slave? I'd check these two items first before tearing it up. If before downshifting he pumps the clutch 2 - 3 times (foot off the go pedal) does it go into gear? The reason it goes into gear on the upshift is - you can "flat" shift - meaning let off go pedal as you upshift and it will "mesh" into gear. Will not do this downshifting unless you increas engine rpm to equal speed of trans. Definitly not recommended for downshifting. Hence the reason I "think" it may be something other thant the clutch itself. Here's another test - with the truck in first gear slight on the go pedal - stab the go pedal - does the clutch slip? if not it is good. Of course this doesn't rule out the possible bad throw out bearing or fork binding. My gut is telling me it's in the hydro unit(s). MHO
