Man, just checked the mileage on the newly aquired 4x4, 19. 8! I only gave up approximatly . 5mpg from what my 2 door regular cab gets! . 5 and I have the added weight of 4x4 and extended cab?! That's pretty much all highway and 70mph at that. I'll take that any day!

Dan, Hope you enjoy the new truck. I have a '96 4x4 Xcab 2500 with a 5 sp and routinely get 21+ on the highway. I have been reading some of the posts from the 24 valver that runs for milage and gets @26 or so running at 52 mph with a throttle positioner instead of cruise. I may try some things myself to see just how high I can go with the 4x4 Xcab 12 valve.

My normal drive is 40 miles one way to work and I can average 19 or so all the time. I would like to see if I could break the 25 mpg average on one of my frequent trips to Dallas. I may not have the patience to drive a truck with over 300 HP at 52 miles an hour though!!! So far my best over a complete tankful has been 21. 67 mpg. This I know I can beat by runnig slower speeds and staying on the interstate and off the back roads.

Good luck with the bombing.

I just got back from a long trip to great lakes to see my son grad from navy boot camp,I drove 2730 total miles at 78 to 82 mph and got an avg of 17. 2mpg,not bad at all considering my heavy foot eh. oh by the way if any one has the option of I80 or I 90 take I 90 its alot better road with alot less traffic,Wyo at 1 to 6 am only met about 20 vehicles man its nice to live in piece #ad

when driving to work and back I maintain 68 mph and I usually get 20 to 21 mpg,It appears that mpg goes downhill after 70 mph

I just got back from a 500 mile trip, and am happy to report after the latest fine tuning, I got 16. 9mpg at between 80 and 85. Oh, and I had about 500 pounds in the box. Pretty good for a truck, most cars wont get that at those speeds.

I went down to Va. 2 wks. ago along I81. I checked the milage after 400 + miles @75 Mph and it was 20. 2!! I have never driven a vehicle that seems to move so effortlessly regardless of the terrain. '96 2500 4X4 Ext. Cab, Long Bed Auto Gota love that!!!

I've been complaining about my milage dropping to 19 - 20 over the last year. I was getting 21 - 22 with my ext. cab 4X4 auto. Dunno what's wrong. Same highways and driving habits.

I Dont go 52 the whole time. There are downhill sections where I will hit 65. I only gained 1 MPG dropping from 60 to 52.
From what i've read about the 12 valve is that your throttle position will try to maintain that rpm. If you were going down the road at 65 and clutched your truck would your RPM change? If not I geuss a throttle cable wont be of much benefit ; Itll just act like a regular cruise.
I would like to see what a 12 valve driven granny style would do.

On my 100 mile rt to work, I average 21. 5 - 22mpg. I set the cruise at 70, and am able to remain at that speed most of the way. I'm looking forward to a longer trip, with fewer stops this summer. I think I can push the mileage to 24 or so.
Also, I picked up around 2 mpg by removing the bug shield and air dam.

My Cummins regularly beats what my 1988 Isuzu Trooper II gets for fuel mileage.
I get 19+mpg with the Cummins on highway runs, 15 to 16 on town and country driving, 12 to 14 when we got a foot of snow and was in 4X4 most of the time.
The 88 Trooper usually gets 1 to 2 MPG less in the above situations, it is Auto transmission, 4X4, and a 4 banger gas burner.

I did a round trip - Charlotte to long Island
And back 1500. miles 'bout 20 mpg Including a few hours sloshing through 8" of snow in 4X4 and the bed packed full on the way home! I Love My Truck!

KB0OU, keep that old Trooper! My 1999 Trooper auto is lucky to see 14 mpg! It's sort of strange to leave the little Trooper parked, and take my 7000lb truck on a trip because it get's BETTER MILEAGE!

My 95 3500 will always get 18. 5 to 20 mpg on the road loaded or not (up to 4500) in the box and 14 to 15 around the fields. The truck has 278000+ miles on it and is still going strong. The only thing I have done to the engine is put a starter, alt, and a water pump on it. What more can you ask for.

I just did a 400mile round-trip... ran with cruise at 70 (2000rpm) and ran a/c about 50% of the time... yield: 21mpg This included some in-town driving, and some bumper-to-bumper freeway stuff.

The electron boys can touch that. I drive 45 miles one way to work and average 21. 5 to 22 MPG in the summer(see sig for truck). This time of year with the cold and winter fuel I am getting about 18. 5. Also read in a post above that his mileage drops off at 70, mine does too. At 80 with the AC on I get 17. 2 to 17. 8, about what I get with my boat on at 65. I would like to hear from a 12V'er that has taller tires and can keep their foot out of it for a full tank, I think that could shut us all up.

Or an OD with a Bombed cummins that can purr at Low RPM at maybe 60 MPH. We have a guy in the SETDR that got 24 at 65 w/ a 12 valve after having his truck "Turned up". I think that the 12 will do better on Flat ground because it acts like a cruise when you hold the throttle in one place. With some of the numbers "electron boys" are posting; I'm not sure the 12 is that much better in Mileage.

I just fueled up yesterday.
490 miles, 24 gallons. 20. 4 MPG.
Most of my driving is 40-50 MPH country like roads.
I get less MPG's on the highway @ 70+ MPH.
