On an extended trip with the family, doing a lot of idling in parking lots while the wife feeds the 7 week old. While feeding time is happening, I take the time to walk around the truck/trailer and check on tires/lights/etc. It has occured to me that my A/C clutch is not cycling. The A/C blows fairly cold, even at idle, so cold that you have to adjust the thermostat down, but the clutch stays pulled in continuously. What controls the clutch? Just signals from the low and high pressure switches? I thought it was from the "computer" up on the fire wall. I don't have a guage set nor my service manual with me.

With out looking at service manual when you turn on the a/c it sends a signal to the PCM, the PCM then sends a signal to the a/c clutch relay to engage a/c clutch if low and high pressure switches agree the system is ready to go you get a/c.

The clutch probably does not disengauge unless there is a problem in the system or turned off (pressure to high or low or low on freon).

Thanks. I thought the coil would freeze up if the compressor stayed on contiuously, but I have not had that problem. I should be home tomorrow, will check the switches out with a DVM. Will also read the service manual and put some guages on it. The clutch releases when I turn the switch to off/vent, so it's not stuck.

if its cold then dont worry about it. If its not up to par get some gauges and see what is happing high side vs. low side.
