My A/C clutch smoked and took out the front seal of the compressor.

I took the truck to a local automotive AC repair shop. He said $870 for a rebuilt one. He called 2 hrs. later and said that one was not the right one but he could get a new one from Seattle for $1095. Wheew.

Whoa horse. Put it back together and let me regroup.

I then called the Dodge dealer... . $470 for a new one with clutch.

Can someone tell me what a reasonable price is for a clutch/compressor for a 98. 5 3500 CTD????

Start combing the junk yards. I would certainly go with the dealer before the other guy. Maybe call cummins and see what they say.

Singing the A/C blues

Recently had my A/C clutch and compressor replaced and system recharged for similar reason.

Dependable local shop did the work for approx $725 with Chrysler parts.

Month later had to have the evaporator core replaced due to the chronic leak bug and system recharged again. This cost approx $675.

Needless to say it costs $$$ to keep your cool!! BTW I'm pushing 208000 miles. See profile for mods.

MOPAR

Just got a compressor from dealer friday it was $366. 00. Told them to give me shop price, and he did! Things are pretty slow at the dealer here. They will get right on the price just to sell something! I talked with the Cummins Tech while I was there and he said they don't do much of anything but warranty work. I thought to myself that if they wouldn't charge so dang much maybe people would take their stuff there. I am glad I do my own!

A/C working again.

I have the A/C problem behind me.

The local DC dealer did sell the A/C compressor and clutch, new, to me for $470. It was a great deal.

Today while having the CTD valves adjusted at Cummins-NW the mech. told me they were a certified A/C repair station.

Long story - short... ... . they installed the new comp. /clutch, purged and recharged the system and did the valve adjustment all for $356. They had a seasonal valve adjustment special for $124.

Life is good (and cool) once again.
