I guess this could go in either forum. The bearing on my A/C compressor needs replacing after 178K. My mechanic asked me to locate a kit. According to the Dodge dealer, there are none available from Chrysler. Anybody know where I can get one?

Are you talking about the idler bearing that goes in the pulley? If so, you could be able to get it at a large automotive A/C parts supply company.

If you are talking about the one in the front part of the comperssor behind the seal, it probably isn't available. It is a case of no one knows how to replace the bearing and/or don't want to tackle it because its cheaper to exchange for a rebuilt compressor.

Tuffcat---If the front bearing in the compressor is noisy, there is no fix for this. With that many miles you are better off getting another compressor. Other internal parts will be worn out also. If the noise is from the clutch bearing you may be able to find a bearing or a replacement clutch. Some of the parts for these a/c systems are not available on the after market. The dealer may be your only option.

you will not be able to find a bearing for the fan clutch or the bearing for the compressor unit they are sold as one unit since the fan clutch seals the front of the compressor. with the amount of miles on a/c system recommend new compressor, reciever dryer, expansion valve.

Since replacing the clutch bearing is close to a $1000 job and the bearing can wear out even if you don't use the AC it makes me wonder if maybe it's a good idea to run a smaller belt(from a non-AC rig?)that skips the AC pulley. Changing the belt back for the hot time of year would be a 5 minute job that could save a heck of a lot of money. Could even be a temporary fix until a person has the funds to replace the compressor. Anyone try this?

Not on that idea!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Do not un hook the belt/elect wire.
If in and a/c system you don't want to operate the a/c system in the off season. As the only thing that will prolong life the front seals(or any seals in the compressor ) from leaking is the lube Which is carried thru the system by the freon... ...
In newer vehicals starting years ago the a/c system also is a must for the operation of the defroster's.
Now some one out there will disagree here But having repaired a/c system's on the big rigs starting back in "72" I learned you DO NOT need to replace the Dryer/aculmator just to replace the a/c compressor.
If the lines are broken and been open for months then replace. If only open for a week or less vac the system for 30 min-1 hr. after repairs and never-never had a come back. Had 125 power unit in our fleet.
As near as i can tell the compressor is a captured D/C supplied item. And with over 700k on mine i must admit i've never been in to my system or eyeball to eyeball with the compressor, (still operational).
BUT so is the a/c comp on fords, but if you know a/c systems,There $500. comp/clutch assy can be had for $168. aftermarket. !!!!

My local DC guy tells me a clutch is listed for the 1994 and maybe 1995 models, list price is about $250.

The compressor assy for a 1996 is about $480 list price. The clutch is not available seperately... #ad

I know of a 95 that has some intermittant clutch noise when the clutch is engaged. I'll let you know if its the bearing in the clutch or the whole unit being shot.

The upside is that R134A is much cheaper than R12! #ad

Good luck

Andy
