The A/C fan only blows from the defroster vents on the dash. It makes no difference which setting I use on the dash knob... ... ... it just blows from the defroster vents on the dash.

Is this system vacuum controlled and run off a vacuum pump?

Any ideas on a quick fix?

TIA... . Bill

Check all the vaccum lines under the hood. Could have one pulled off, or a hole in one or something.

The defrost vents are the "default" position.

Bill, On passenger side right in front of glove box & above receiver drier are vacumn lines. The line that runs to white plastic connector is the line that controls a/c air flow direction.

and you can pull the glovebox real easy... while it is open, use one hand to hold it down, the other to "push back" on the rear top lip of the glovebox. . it bends and sucks the 2 retainers in, so the glovebox falls right out (a dc tech showed me this neat trick).

the vacuum valve for the dash control is plainly visible (and changeable) with the glovebox removed.

my dashpot failed that flips it from defrost to vent, just above the accelerator pedal under dash, not the one down by the floor.

Also if nothing else works follow the vacum line down to the cruise control servo, sometimes they break down under the battery box and you lose to much vacum for everything else to work right.

Bill,

Check the easy stuff first. Is the knob actually turning the control? These knobs are a poor excuse for a piece of junk. They break so that they do NOT turn the control even tho they are still on there.

Thanks to everyone for your help. You TDR guys are the best source of detailed info. on repairs I've ever encountered. Can you imagine going to the dealer for my problem? Hang on to your wallet and patience... ... and take an extra blood pressure pill too!:D

Bill-

I had the exact same problem a little while ago. The vacuum line had come loose from its holder a melted in half on the exhaust manifold. I just cut it a little short and reconnected it.

Hey Bill!

I do know that this is the best place to get info. and answers to almost any question you got. Now about hanging onto your wallet! That's a whole other story:eek: I believe I've spent more money since I became a member on goodies for my rig since I bought it. Can't remember how many hundres if not thousands of dollars. Mucho dinero!I am finally getting my truck the way I want it and the way it should be designed!Oo.

:D How do you guys get the bombing $$$$ past the wifey? I only have a short, conservative list... ... ... . EZ, ATS full transmission, BD exhaust brake. I want it, I want it, I want it!!!!!!!

Bill,

I have a '96' that did exactly the same thing and it was the same dashpot that KB0OU talks about. Just take the kick panels(?) off of the lower dash, start the truck, watch the dashpot as you or a helper change the vent control. If the dashpot doesn't move, pull the line and listen for the sound of air moving. If you have vacuum but the dashpot doesn't move, replace the dashpot. It's only $25 - $30 from the dealer.

Hope this helps.

Gene

When the cruise control didn't work too, the light bulb came on and said..... "Check 1st @ the pump!" I did. During a underhood cleaning frenzy I accidentally pulled the hose off the pump. I popped it back on and, you guessed it, everything works again. I'm still fighting against the old habit of thinking a vaccum leak will lead to a rough idle (from my gasser days). I'm a slow study. Do I miss my 460 Ford?... ... ... ... ... ... ... NO!

:)

The lever broke off the divertor flap on mine. I reached through the intake vent by the floor with a coathanger and pulled it rearward, then sunk a long sheetmetal screw through the housing to keep it in position. Now I ALWAYS have air through the dash vents, which is just fine with me in South Florida!

sorry, i meant the vacuum arm which controls fresh/recirculate

dmurdock, if it's like mine, it's the top of the flap where the arm attaches that broke off. I tried epoxy (JB Weld) but it didn't hold, so I just locked it into the dash-vent-open position with the sheet rock screw.
