Did the HVAC switch work when you bought the truck? I ask this because this part seldom fails. Sometimes people don't notice that there are two wire harnesses that plug into the back of the assembly. The wire harnesses, the cable, and the vacuum tubing cluster are just a little short to work around if the switch has to be moved out of the way to work on something else. So someone might disconnect one or more of them to make access a little easier. In doing so, the lock tabs on the plugs can get broken off. If that happens, the plugs can slowly back out and lose electrical connection. Sometimes, one or more just don't get plugged back in. (Don't ask how I know this.)

The wiring diagram in the 1996 factory TSM is vague on the existence of two sockets for connectors. Relying on on the TSM exclusively, as good as it is, can be misleading in this case.

I was repairing the plastic dashboard on my 1996 recently. Due to a senior moment, I took the HVAC switch apart thinking that I had to do that. I was of course wrong. Reassembling it involved finding, putting back, and realigning a number of small parts (that had flown away), and then snapping it all back together still in alignment. About a month passed before I got to dashboard reassembly. I had not marked the wire harnesses. So I used the TSM and my memory. The HVAC switch did not turn on the blower or anything else. After two hours last night of studying the TSM wiring diagrams and looking at pictures of replacement parts online (thank you @Iron Duke II), I figured out that I hadn't plugged the long, seven pin plug back in. I did that and as if by magic, everything worked.

If you do buy one, order a replacement by part number. It's printed on the back of the part you have. I discovered that there are some differences in the plug sockets. You need to be certain to get the kind that takes two plugs, a long one and a smaller rectangular one. The HVAC switch for the 1500 may fit physically, but probably won't be fully functional. This will be despite the online seller's fitment guide.
