Does the A/C stay on all the time when you turn the nob?

I would like to just have the fan drawing outside air, but the a/c is always working.

every vehical we have has a on/off for the a/c. A/C is something I just get but never need to use (up here in B. C. ), just have it for resale.

Should I just unpluge the a/c pump, or would it set off codes!!

I don't knwo if their is a cut off switch. However, If you don't run your A/C every once in a while they bearing will sieze up. While the A/C is running it lubes everything. Sorry I coouldn't be of help.

Paul. . don't know about the '01. . the 98. 5 have a setting that is fresh air to the right of aircondition . . takes a couple seconds to clear out chilled air... it's the setting about 1:00 o'clock . . I'm sure they have an air setting. . keep trying

The only settings on my 2001 that don't turn on the AC are the lower and upper vents that show a single arrow on the selector knob.

Paul I have 96 it mite have different controls. It has double fan settings one for a/c(turn counter clock wise), one for heaster and vent. I have tempature control knob, selector knob, fan speed knob.
How many control knobs or levers do you have? and Functions?

Missouri Mule I only have one nob for picking what vent to use, and the other nob for temp, one for fan speed also.

The first setting for vent selection says max a/c, but I never use that setting. I only want circulation of outside air most of the time, and the air coming out is much colder than it is outside, also there is a puddle under the truck eveytime I park stating to me the compreser is allways on.

There should be an a/c on/off button.

Your owner's manual has the details. Since I'm 2001, SLT, 2500, I'm betting yours is same as mine:
Max AC = Recirc + AC always on
AC = Outside air + AC always on
Next setting, AC "may or may not be on" (blame Dodge, I'm just the messenger)
Next setting - AC OFF (vents)
Next setting - AC OFF (vent to feet)
Next Defrost + Panel, AC "may or may not be on"
Next, full defrost, AC "may or may not be on"
This is from memory; I may have missed one or two. See your manual. I hate this system, but that is how Dodge set it up.

Paul looked at a customer's 2000 it has the same set up as yours. He told me afer the ac/fresh selection there is floor, than panel this one is susposed to be for fresh air only. I go with HC post and with willyslover and Dane post.
If that fresh air panel selection doesn't work you might have fresh/ciculating door stuck or bad switch, grounded wiring, but I'm going by how the 96 controls(knobs) work.
Selector control works by vacuum. Vacuum is supplied to actuators in the a/c,heater unit. Fresh/cirdulating door uses same sytem. Check vacuum sytem out, bad valve, pinched lines, bad actuator. You mite be stuck on one selction, in your case a/c,fresh.
I would assumme that there is a electrical switch incorporated in with your selctor control for the a/c modes to turn on a/c clutch, for this you will need some one with a more current shop manual.

OK I have it now the A/C works on all vent settings exept for two, strait vent and foot setting.

The defrost is what I wanted to work with out A/C, but no luck with that. It must be used in the defrost mode to help get rid of moisture or some thing.

Defogging the windscreen is one reason. Another might well be to run the compressor (and thus lube the whole system) during time periods when the operator might never run the A/C. Like winter; folks rarely run their A/C in the winter. Another reason could be to avoid pumping moist air onto a cold windshield, which would cause instant fog.

The only way around this is to put a switch in-line with the A/C lead going from the control switch to the PCM. Yes, the PCM actually controls whether or not the compressor runs; the dash setting is really just a hint. You should be able to find a small microswitch at your local electronics shop that will handle the task; you can mount a small-enough switch just about anywhere.

If the ac compressor did not operate in the defrost mode, no defrost. The ac de-humidifies the air, clearing the glass. I'm old enough to remember cars with no ac available. The defroster was a dry rag and the driver's hand.
I like the position which may or may not operate the compressor. Just leave it there, and the outside air temperature turns the compressor on or off as needed. Nice touch.
