Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) A different 5th gear loss!

I lost 5th gear so got me the latest locking nut and took the tail off. When I got it down, the nut was OK. So I got to looking and found the snap ring was gone on the shaft below the nut. Well, I not that smart about transmissions so got to checking and found that is part of 5th gear. I got me a new snap ring and put it on. That fixed the problem. I found the old snap ring in the bottom of the transmission in several peaces. Has anyone ever had this problem before? By the way, it is a 3500, 94 that pulls all the time that has 250K miles on it.
