A friend has a set of 3. 73 gears out of a ford with a dana 60 front and a 70 rear. The obvious question is with these work in my dodge with a 60 front and 80 rear. Is the time and money to swap worth it?<input id="gwProxy" type="hidden"><!--Session data--><input onclick="jsCall();" id="jsProxy" type="hidden"><input id="gwProxy" type="hidden"><!--Session data--><input onclick="jsCall();" id="jsProxy" type="hidden">

Not worth the effort. The D70 gears will not work in a D80. The 60 gears might interchange but that depends on if the Ford 60 is a low pinion unit like the Dodge.

And with 35's you do not want the numerically lower gears. It will put too much load on your auto or your clutch.

He's right, that's the wrong way to go for gears. If you want to change them go the other way with the ratio. I don't remember ever seeing a ford 60 that wasn't a high pinion.

U guys must have 3. 54s I hate my 4. 10s I wana be able to cruise at 70 without it sounding like the motors in my lap. I have to literally slow down to around 60-65/2000-2200 to have a normal conversation. Plus Im sick of ford drivers and 3gen dodge guys touting their 20+ mpg...

Its not that it wont work but with those tall tires your trans is going to work a lot harder. The truck is going to fell lazy. And you wont see 20mpg with that truck up in the air like that on tall tires, sorry. Dont believe 1/2 of what you read or told about mpg. My 2wd 93 got 24mpg twice it gets around 19. My 04. 5 got 21 2 or 3 times but it's average is 16. It is easy to remember those 72 degree, tail wind days. How you drive it makes a big difference. My guess is lifted+tall tires+mods=you cant keep your foot out of it. And "there's nothing wrong with that". I am thinking of putting 4. 10 in my 04 I wish they were there I tow big with it. If you are going to try it do just the rear axle, drive it for a weak or so tell us what you think. Take the front drive shaft out and leave it out until the gears match.

Have you recalibrated your speedometer? At 70mph you should be at 1912 rpm's. 65mph = 1775 rpm's, 75mph = 2049 rpm's. That's figuring 410s, 34. 8 tires, and 48re auto trans. Not sure what trans you have. Check out Gear Ratio Calculator

I just installed 37" and when I had 35" on I was turning 1750ish for 65-68mph. I used my smarty and adjusted while watching my GPS. I got great mpg's 19-20 while using smarty fuel saver and light foot. this is all freeway. around town I get 14ish because of heavy foot. with 37" Im at 1850ish at 65. I would hand calculate. get a gps or borrow one and see what you are really driving.
