what happened to XCUMMINSX

We would really appreciate a few little prayers for two of the furry members of our K9-American family. Suzy and Bob [she's a girl, but we just call her Bob, kinda like a boy named Sue :) ] Both of these guys have spent most of the past week at the Ohio State University Vet Hospital in Columbus - aka The Cleveland Clinic For Dogs. The local vets are fine for routine stuff but anything potentially serious and they go to OSU, even though it's a 1200 mile drive from where we live.

Little Prayer #1: Suzy is all black, 23 lbs, 7 yrs. old, mostly Border Collie. Awhile back I found a lump. The local vet said, "It's nothing - don't worry about it. " I'm not a worrier but I've been checking human lumps for 35 years, so after watching it get a little bigger over a few months I took her back and twisted his arm to do a biopsy. Mast cell tumor, malignant, bad. :mad: So off to OSU. They found it's spread too much for surgery to do any good so she's on chemo, which, surprisingly usually is pretty effective.

Little Prayer #2: Bob is 23 lbs, Golden Retriever mix and she's 17 years old. She's had low grade chronic renal failure for over a year but it's been pretty well managed with Science Diet k/d food. She developed a dental infection two days before Suzy was to leave for OSU. The local vet found she had a heart murmur and her kidney function was worse, therefore, anesthesia to take care of the teeth was high risk. So she went to Columbus with Suzy. Bob had a complete work-up - dental, cardiology, internal medicine and nephrology consults. After two days of IVs, tune-ups, etc. she had her surgery this AM. She did great through the procedure [lost 6 teeth] and is now in the post-op ICU. She seems to be coming along great but we still have our fingers crossed.

We sure would appreciate all y'all's +++ thoughts for our little buddies and also a prayer of thanks for the dedication, skills and caring of all the good folks at OSU Vet Teaching Hospital.

And I thank God for all you out there in TDRland who I know understand this stuff enough that I can be comfortable writing this post asking for support.

Thanks.

My dog is not a pet, he is part of the family. He rates higher with me than most of my family does. I hope all works out wih yours. Good luck with the bill also. I've had previous dogs to the vet school at Wahington State University and it's top notch care for top notch prices. Jake

Thanks, guys. The care is top notch but, while not cheap, the cost isn't really too bad. Most fees are less than what the local vets charge. Doesn't make much difference, though - we'd go into hock up to our eyeballs for our guys. Ours aren't "pets" either. :)

Progress Note: As of last PM, Bob was still in ICU but "doing great" according to the Doc. That's another thing about OSU - they call. We got four calls yesterday - one before surgery and three after with updates about her condition. Maybe she can come home today.

Tom,

Hope Bob and Suzy are doing well. I understand how you feel. I have a little 7# wiener dog who is my baby. One day when Sadie (the dog) was with my wife in the car and she was stopped at a red light, there was a CTD next to my wife and Sadie got excited because she thought it was me :-laf My wife said it was kind of sad when it wasn't me

Best of luck to you!

Paul

Thanks Paul. A 7# wiener dog, eh? Almost brought one of those home 2 weeks ago but wifey would have strangled me for adding another one to our pack of 7. Sure was a cute little thing - a girl with long hair.

Prayers on the way Doc, I hope Bob and Suzy are both doing great today.

In my book, dogs rank right up near the top out of God's gifts to man, they add so much to our lives that it's easy to justify spending some $$$ to take care of them.

THX, Mike. Bob came home from the hospital yesterday and looks pretty chipper for a 17 y/o girl. Only problem now is Bob wants Suzy's food and vice versa - back to their old tricks. :)

best thoughts and prayers to you tom, and your 4 legged children, suzy & bob.

don't know what i would do if my baby (hershey - chocolate lab) had these problems.

its good to know we have good medical treatment available for our pets.

god bless and prayers of good health on the way.

I hope your hershey is as good as mine was. He was the first chocolate lab I had. He only lived to be 12, but was a great friend till the end. He and my son grew up together, and he would've done anything to protect my son. He had an anurism and couldn't be saved :{ , but luckily I had gotten a yellow lab, Joe, about a year sooner that Hershey trained.

The vet was kinda rattled when I loaded him in the front seat of the pickup to bring home. I told him that he always rode in the front with me, and wasn't going to take his last ride in the back. I just wish that they had a similar lifespan to ours, cuz it's hard to loose them. Jake

As others have said they definitely are family members!!!!!! They are little kids who just happen to walk on all fours, have fur and a speach impediment.

Prayers are on the way ASAP!!!!!!!!!

My dogs are as much a part of the family as anyone else in the family, as we have no children.

Theyre my fur kids. :D

Prayers are on their way for a speedy recovery.

Tom. . just read this as I haven't been to the Other forum in a week...

our best to your pet family and also to you and your family during your time of need...

pets are an important part of life around here so I know what your dealing with . . we lost a 19 year companion a couple years ago and it is still mourned.

Update: Bob and Suzy are both doing really well - giong out, eating, sleeping, snooping around and all the other usual K9 activities. They have to go back to OSU for follow-ups at the end of the month, so we're still keeping our fingers crossed. Thanks again, guys, for all your thoughts and prayer.

BTW, as I said, Bob is a girl - her real name is Jirie, pronounced Gee-ree, sort of a contraction of Jean Marie. Somewhere along the way somebody in the family called her Gee-ree-bob, which is a take-off on "Hey-bob-a-ree-bob", which should be familiar to most of our pre-baby-boomer contemporaries out there, eh? :cool:

Most all of our guys have at least two names:

Jirie->Bob, Beeble, Ree

Suzy->Hero, Z-Z, Geronimo

Rocky->Rocket, The Rock

Suzy & Rocky as a pair->The Apache Twins

Annie->Orf (Little Orphan Annie)

Augie->Augness (Agnes when he's a nerd), Willoughby

Casper->Polar Bear, GoodBoy

Corey->Corkmeister, The Cork

The fascinating thing is that each one knows all variations of his/her names. So, how many names do all y'all's dogs have? :-laf
