Well guys, I have been driving my truck since 12-20-02, and monitoring it's little quirks and operating characteristics since I've owned it. After watching this forum steadily for about a year now, it seems that I am encountering a few things that nobody else has mentioned. I will throw these out there to see if anyone has any experiences of their own.

#1 (and most annoying right now): Since about Feb. , the truck has developed a belt squeak that has gone from very intermittant to constant as of today. Used to be a real slight chirp-chirp as the truck sat at idle, and was noticed only when the engine was hot. Now when the truck is started cold, it is a very loud CHIRP-CHIRP, and when accelerating the engine above idle is it a constant loud SCREECH. Real impressive driving through traffic with a $40K truck and people in other cars are looking around in panic trying to figure out where that terrible noise is coming from. Dealer has ordered a new belt and tensioner, of course the parts are coming from the National warehouse and wont be seen til early next week. In the meantime I wont be driving it too much as it is just too darn embarrassing/aggravating for me to deal with. Ill be driving my wife's car until the parts are here.

#2(slightly less aggravating but not much): Fuel gauge is been acting up off and on since new. First time I encountered it was filling up the tank while the engine was running back in Feb. Fuel gauge would not move at all, even though it was full. After driving about a mile, I pulled off and shut off the engine, let it sit for about 30 sec, and then re-started. Gauge jumped right up to full. I chalked it up to filling with the key on and never thought twice. Now the last 2 times I have put fuel in it has done the same, both times the key was off. One time it was filled to full and came back up after cycling the key, yesterday I put in only about 6. 5 gallons and the needle still hasnt moved from near empty (low fuel light is on).

#3 (aggravates the wife more than me, but is still annoying): I have noticed the engine rpm's surge at idle. Not noticeable on the tach but is very audible. Sounds like the "romping" idle problem the Ferd guys have been talking about. It is a constant up-down-up-down sound from the engine that is worse in the cab than it is outside the truck. Seems worse when the engine is cold, but I think that is due to the extra load put on the engine by the grid heaters. If the truck is driven for a long distance and gotten good and hot, it is almost not noticed. It also is worse when the outside temp is colder. I have attributed this condition to have been possibly caused by the Edge EZ, it seems to have popped up right after it was installed. Edge sent me a replacement box that seems better, and after talking to Rod at Wildcat Diesel it seems that I may need to try yet another box to see if that will cure it. It seems that although the box is not supposed to have any effect on the engine at idle speed, something in the programming of it is effecting only a few certain trucks. We will see what happens with the 3rd box. (Thanks to Rod at W. D. for the great customer assistance and advice!)

OK people, sorry this is so long, but I could really use a few words of wisdom from the pros. I guess I am too much of a perfectionist, these little niggles really bum me out. I think I need to go over to the Ferd forum and cheer myself up a bit!!!;)

I got my truck the first week in October.

1. I don't have this problem.

2. I haven't had this problem and I always fill up with the engine running.

3. I've noticed this a little bit but I've attributed it to the charging system cycling to recharge the batteries after the grid heaters. I have an EZ as well and seem to remember noticing it more after I installed it but it's been so long I don't really remember for sure. I seem to remember it more when I had it on level 6 but I don't run it on that level any more.

My Dad's, and also a friends Duramax has the Idle romp thing. It sounds much more like it is changing timing than actual romp. The RPM fliar isn't noticable in the tach (I think it's a computer cover-up) but the Chevies have a VERY fast reacting Oil Pressure gauge, and it is visible there, everytime it romps or lopes for a split second (every few seconds) the oil presure drops and picks up a few PSI (2-3PSI)

Not sure what it is, but I'm guessing it has to do more with the Common rail. Who knows. .

Sorry bud, I haven't had any of those problems either.

I am curious about the idle problem though if it's attributed to the EZ as I was thinking of getting one.

For the squeak, check the alternator bracket for a crack. There is a TSB on this for trucks built before Feb 13, 2003. TSB 08-007-03

Thanks badunit, I'll check into that TSB and see if that might not be what is causing the squeak. I appreciate the input. It's not very assuring to know that these problems are not common issues. That means the dealer will be scratching their heads as well... I guess that's the gamble you take by buying a first year vehicle.

I noticed the fuel gauge thing that you mentioned at about 2k. It only shows up when I put fuel in the truck without shutting it off. Usually takes about 30 minutes for it to realize the fuels there and the gauge to come up. You're right though, turn it off and restart it and it comes right up to where it's suppose to be.

Im guessing in one way or another the gauge has smoothing or else it would bounce around and I was thinking that when that smoothing gets confused is when you see this problem. If that was true a reflash might fix it down the road. I havent had it and I only shut down once during fueling when a attendant insisted on it. I dont have the other two problems, might lights dim a little when the grid heater turns on but no surgeing.

I'm pretty happy with the truck but there are just a few things that I would change if I could. (You listening DC?)

I've noticed that if you turn on your lights when it's not dark, (for rain, fog, snow, etc. ) the radio and other readouts are tough to see. The dimmer won't let them go bright enough for daytime viewing.

I'm starting to get used to the computer control of the engine speed. It seems like an overactive governor that goes a little too far sometimes. I turned a corner at my son's elemetary school this morning and with a very light foot, it went to about 3k real fast in 2nd gear. I'm sort of learning to predict it and adjust for how it's going to respond most of the time.

If you move the dimmer switch from the brightest setting up one click it will brighten everything as if the lights were not on.

The "parade" or "funeral" mode on the switch is one very nice feature in my opinion. It used to drive me nuts not to be able to see the console or radio info when lights were on in the daytime.

I, also, have experienced none of the problems that jcarver has.

Dean.

Well badunit, I talked to the service dept, they could not find bulletin #08-007-03. How did you find that information? Is there anyway you could get ahold of a copy of it? When I get home tonight I will be checking for cracks in the bracket. That seems like a definite possibility, since it has gotten progressively worse. Maybe the alternator is ready to fall right off the engine and I don't even know it!!

WOW, thanks. I just went out into the garage to check it out. I guess I thought that turned on the cargo lamp or something. Glad I spoke up. I like it EVEN BETTER now:D

Well, thanks to badunit and davidclark, I found out this is definitely the cause of the problem. There are two hairline cracks at the top of the bracket right where it makes the 90 degree bend. Very small cracks but they can be plainly seen upon inspection. Thanks so much for the help! Now any suggestions on the other two concerns?

OK, here's another stupid little item: When I have the radio on in accessory mode, the steering wheel buttons don't work and the radio display is blank. (You can't tell what station you're on--Better know the presets by heart:confused: )
