She can sing that's for sure, I just watched her on a news show, she did amitt the show came after her... she did take singing lessons once a week for quite some time in her thirtys. So is she truly an amateur,or a trained singer??

As a musician myself, I think it is perfectly acceptable to consider her an "amateur" even though she's had voice lessons.

How many golfers have taken years of golf lessons but have never played in a PGA event?

How many TDR members have taken courses in auto mechanics or sat through workshops at a TDR event but they are still "shade tree mechanics".

Who's taken cooking or baking courses for the enjoyment? Doesn't mean they are professional chefs.

That's what continuing education is all about. Identify a talent or strong interest (hobby) and learn more about to help your enjoyment of this interest.

Can this lead to a professional carrier? Sure! That's not a bad thing.

In Ms. Boyle's case, she has a fantastic voice. If she has some acting talent also, with this exposure there's no reason why she shouldn't end up on a stage on Broadway or London, Toronto or any other big theatrical city.

There are plenty of musical theater roles she could be cast for:

Music Man - Marian's mother

Fiddler on the Roof - the mother or the match maker

Oklahoma - Aunt Eller

Wicked - Madame Morrible

Sound of Music - Mother Abbess.

... to name a few.

Tbone, I agree with all you wrote, I think since the show came after her there is a bit of disingenuousness going on with the show, kinda like throwing a ringer into the mix?

If using a "talent scout" to find her is the only disingenuous thing going on here, I don't have a big problem with that. I've been waiting for the bomb shell to drop on this situation.

It was obvious from the guys back stage that the producers knew that she could sing and they actually "used" her in a not so flattering way. They knew how she'd be treated by the audience (and judges). They through her to the lions and she triumphantly beat them into submission.

She did the morning show circuit yesterday via phone and live feed interviews. I would suspect that she has an agent now or the show is providing assistance for promotional purposes.

I think it was CBS that interviewed people in the pub where Ms. Boyle does Karaoke. They knew her potential. It was likely where any talent scout would have seen her for the first time.

Three things:

I hope this is truly real. No voice over, lip sych, digital enhancement, studio recorded crap that keep talentless hacks like Britney Spears, et al. in the public eye (or ear as the case may be).

I hope the next song(s) she has to (or chooses to) sing are performed and received with the same enthusiasm. Lord help her if the producers force her to sing a pop song not fitting of her talents (and physical stature).

I hope she has a smart lawyer or agent that will watch out for her (and taking their cut of the proceeds of course). The sharks of the entertainment ind. could use her up and then spit her out, leaving only a more heart broken middle-aged, small town Scottish citizen who wishes she never stepped on the stage.
