What is HENCE???

We have been semi-looking around at new computers and wanting to update. The one we use now is pretty old and we have expanded the memory to the hilt. Wife is sold on the Intel Pentiulum 4 and says we got to have the cd burner (rewrite) and other bells and whistles that go along with a good pc. My problem is I'm cheap! I don't won't to spend a lot on one, gets into my stash for goodies for the CTD. Now I'm looking for suggestions for a new pc, I want a good one, but CHEAP! I mean dirt CHEAP! The only thing I would like the most would be a nice large flat screen monitor and be able to hook up the digital camera. Oo.

Dude, I got a Dell.

Got it about 2 months ago and am very pleased with same. Stepped up from an E-Machine and what a difference. Quiet and fast. The E was OK for a bottom feeder but the Dell is light years ahead.

Got a 17" flat screen monitor. Unbelievable.

My humble opinion is that you get what you pay for. Spend a few more $$ and get the best.

Plus, with the rebates thru Dell it was right around a grand. Money well spent.

You can get fairly good deals on dell reconditioned machines on there web site. These are the machines that get returned to the dell factory and the factory fixes them and re sells em. They come with a warranty and everyting.

Are you sure you really need a new machine?

I'm getting along just fine with 'ancient' (in computer years) technology. Currently using a:

* AMD 266MHz overclocked (souped up) to 366MHz (~Pentium I?).

* 256MB RAM.

* AT form factor motherboard (ATX & other flavors current technology).

* Windows '98 2nd Edition.

* 80GB Maxtor 7200rpm HD.

* 48x24x48 CDRW.

* No-name 64MB Video Card.

* 18. 1" Mag Innovision LCD display.

Aside from the motherboard & processor I've upgraded my system piecemeal. Just kept an eye out for 'deals'. Cheapest way I've found to improve performance & functionality :D.

Seriously tho, the only time I wish for more 'horsepower' is when I'm running an engine building program with lots of parameters. Otherwise my system does just fine. But I do have an eye out for a combo DVD-CDRW drive so I can also play DVDs on my machine.

Good luck.

Check out gotapex.com for deals. I got my last 2 computers from deals posted there. Both were dell servers around $350. each brand new direct from dell! I agree with BHN4221 the dells are a much nicer machine.
