Just started teaching my daughter to shoot.

Started a couple of nights ago by spending a couple of hours going over safety and handling of the pistol.

The next night we did a quick review and I handed her the gun (Rugar SR22), a clip and 1 round. She handled it perfectly. So, I gave her two more rounds. I was really proud... she cleared the gun properly, reloaded and fired two more. (we have to work on her aim/squeeze. 3 shots, 10 inch spread at 25 feet)

So, I figured it was time to turn her loose under observation and handed her the box. (about 70 rounds in it)

She loaded a full clip and began shooting... . and then I hear "Ow Ow Ow". About the same time I see her thumb the safety on and set the gun down complaining that it had burned her.

It had.

The rupture was at the 8 oclock position and the gasses had an easy escape from the gun between the slide and the grip on the left side... . right across her left hand and a little in her face.

She's fine, but what a start, eh? (It happened on her 7th shot ever. )

What the heck??? I've NEVER had a . 22 come apart. Never even heard of one coming apart. Old batch of bullets, maybe? Any corrosion on the other bullets from the same case?

Hmmm, not good..... And at what a time... . Dang. Looks like it ruptured from excessive pressure without being chambered... that's odd. Makes me wonder if the slide didn't close all the way before firing the round... . slamfire, basically... . I'd have to check that pistol out, and see if I could figure out how it did it... . I don't think it's an ammunition fault, just due to the size of the rupture... . To be that large, it couldn't have been chambered all the way when it ignited the powder charge... . Also note that the primer head appears bulged..... If you look at the crack running forward, it's got burn marks on either side towards the top where it was in the chamber... . there are none on the rear, indicating the gasses escaped fairly quickly, without burning against anything, except on the back against the bolt where it appears it was under the extractor... . and the extractor could have detonated it when it chambered the cartridge... . but I'm only working off a picture and experience, so that's a guess... .

Except for the problem with the bad round, you are doing great teaching your daughter. I used to coach 4-H shooting sports. I really enjoyed working with the kids. One of these days I'll go back to coaching.
