Trailering is the only way to go. I used to flat tow, but as the equipment changed and the tires got more aggressive (see signature), I started trailering.

I bought a 20ft trailer and put a big ol job box on the front. It holds everything, tools, spare parts, Jeep tops, camping stuff! And the trailer is big enough I can put the Harley sideways in front of the Jeep or an ATV. Last year when we went camping by Silverton, I put almost a rick of firewood in front of the Jeep. Firewood is kinda hard to come by in Colorado so we took our own!

The Truck pulls it like it not even there, altho the motorhome grunts a little on the mountain passes. I just gear it down, stay in the slow lane and be patient and let it eat its way up the mountain, so far so good!! Keeps the engine and transmission temps down.

You'll like what you can do with the trailer! Good buy!

I agree trailer all the way. I use to use a tow bar to tow my Jeep for about 6 months, but after I fried my transmission by distroying my 3 and 4th gear syncros and messing up the input shaft by towing the Jeep with the transmission and transfer case in nuetrul 300 miles (very bad and expensive). And that combined with my trips seem to get farther away from home since the state of Iowa does not really lend itself to good wheeling. Plus it gives me the peace of mind of no matter where I go and how hard I push the Jeep I can get it home with out too much trouble as all I need to worry about is getting it back to the truck and trailer.

Yeah, I used a tow dolly over thanksgiving break to go from PA to OBX, NC and then over to Charlotte, and back to Pitt. Well I made it fine and did some wheeling at Uwharrie NF, just into VA on the way home my rear R&P blew:{ . So no more dolly for me. Oh well, I wanted to regear anyhow;)

You can get a 14-16 foot trailer pretty reasonable and its like a dolly that you have to find a place to put it. Also, if your Jeep breaks, you can get it home on the trailer. Its the ONLY way to go.

I only used the dolly because it was a last minute trip and a friends dad had the dolly...

I looked for awhile for a cheap used trailer, couldn't find any worth what they wanted, so I got this 16 footer new. I like it and it pulls nice.

I also use a 16ft car trailer for my Jeep. Great peace of mind that I know I can get home despite what I tackle offroad.

I just did a total re do of my 86, 44's, Detroit lockers both ends, NP435 transmission, 4. 0, Mastercraft seats and custom dash. I've added new wheels and tires since this pic was taken. Some of the shots were taken as I was putting it together.

Nice TJ! What is that paint color called? I don't think I have seen one that color. Looks kind of military with the black rims. I like it!

Thanks, it's called light fern green. I think they only put it on TJ for 1 year, maybe 2.

some of the other details of the Jeep...

front and rear D44 with lockers and disc brakes(front is out of a Waggy and rear was Isuzu Rodeo)

RE 5. 5"long arm lift

D300 transfer case w/ 4:1 gear set

37" Goodyear MT/Rs

9000# Milemarked hydro winch

Also have a 1" body lift... to clear the D300.

actually I haven't wheeled with the 37s yet, just traded a set of 36" Swamper SXs for them, but I think it'll be fine, had some extra room with the swampers

I think you will like the MT/R's for rock crawling but you might miss the SX's if you ever get into mud or wheeling in areas like Oklahoma where there is dirt and rock both. I was in Poteau and Clayton this winter and it rained some every day and guys with Swampers and mud-terrains did much better. My $ . 02

Yeah, I haven't been too impressed by the MT/Rs in the mud, just sold my 35s. But on the rocks:D

I don't much care for the mud and can really do without it and avoid it when possible. I'd have loved to try out the new BFG Krawlers, but at $400 ea, and have to buy new wheels to run them:(

I built this trailer specifically for my Jeep, it sits very low to the ground to cut down on wind resistance.

Avoid mud?! Tough to do in the Midwest. We have rocks, but they're usually surrounded by mud. Makes things more interesting. :D

Can't imagine going wheeling without the trailer. Pic is in reader's rides. It's a must-have jeepin' accessory, like the CTD Ram. ;)

BTW, I'm looking for a set of used 38-42" tires to replace my worn 38's.
