I now have 37,700 miles on my 07 6. 7 and for the past few hundred miles it has been puffing black smoke when I accelerate to pass or climb a hill. I am now out of warranty of course. Is it possible that the truck is stuck in regen mode???? I don't have a pyro, so I can't tell when it regens. Until now I have never noticed any smoke. Has anyone had this problem?????????

just an odd question have you checked you air filter? mine smoke like crazy when the filter is even remotely dirty.

No additives, but I do get stuck running LSD from time to time. By the way, I am always towing around 1oK lbs. if that could have anything to do with it.

Sounds like LSD killed another DPF or worse

I doubt the LSD has caused his problems, you didn't hear me say this but I've run LSD quite a bit because it still isn't readily available in my area and I've had no emissions problems, at least problems that weren't caused by a boneheaded tech. I'm out of emissions warranty now, it is 50k miles and I'm over 60K.

I also doubt the LSD had anything to do with it. If you drop the outlet pipe the DPF should be snow white. If you see any black sooty spots the DPF is bad. Take it in and have them check it out and get the latest flash done at the same time. It should be covered so nothing to worry about.

You know this really depends on those other two letters. If its soot then BMemmott is right. I could have added more but I assume everyone knows how the DPF works and what it's for.

LSD produces a lot more soot from the extra PPM of sulfur. There are TSBs for both the regular truck and C&C because the regen is not working properly and clearing the filter for those using ULSD, let alone LSD. LSD is 3300 times more sulfur than ULSD translating into some exponential amount of extra soot in the exhaust.

When the DPF stops working or gets so clogged from the extra soot it can't work, the pressure increases in the exhaust will certainly push out some of the soot. Accelerating creates more pressure(of very hot air) burning some trapped soot and throwing it out the tail pipe resulting in a puff of smoke.

I doubt you're stuck in regen. Your DPF probably doesn't work. The added hot gas pressure in your exhaust is just going to decrease the life of your turbo by subjecting it to constant higher temps. It could eb even worse is you tow a lot. My advice is go have your DPF checked out. It seems a reasonable step to save other engine parts.

If it's a non-friendly "hi" you're adding to that word my advice is go somewhere else.

Hey Caveman, I asked for advise not an s**t talker. You sound like a women.

Quick Question for you. Are you able to regularly drive the truck for 45 minutes or more each time?

I transport cars for a living. between CA, TX, and WA. 2 cars at a time in a 34ft enclosed trailer. So yes, I normally am driving on the open highway for 10-12 hr at a time pulling between 8k-10k lbs. And thanks for the good info.

It has been about 1200 miles since I first posted this problem as I am on my way home from Seattle. I replaced the air filter about 500 mi ago, but I don't think it helped much. And the check engine light is now on. So the truck is going in first thing monday morning. Hopefully my local dealer (Westoakks Dodge) can figure out something even though the service writer had no clue about the new emissions when they did an oil change 3 weeks ago.

OOOps, I should have sent EB a PM instead of asking on this thread. My fault, sorry. It does somewhat apply to this conversation.

Here's why I ask(some thoughts for the group)

I'm trying to figure out what is unique about EB being able to use LSD without noticeable issues. This in combination with understanding the regen process which has an extensive thread https://www.turbodieselregister.com...2007-5/185497-understanding-regeneration.html

The thread talks about sufficient exhaust temps to properly go through the active regen process. The dealer told me earlier this week after getting the latest flash that my truck was forced into active regen, my DPF was over 80% and I should not turn off the enginer. They told me to drive it in a lower gear for 45 minutes minimum to build up enough heat and return if it throws more codes. So, this reinforces something I saw on another thread that states the active process takes 45 minutes of heavy driving to fully complete.

Now BMemmott, your driving tells me active regen should be able to complete its cycle properly, yet you still have issues and EB does not.

Before you go to the dealer print off this latest TSB and take it with you

TSB 18-033-07 REV. B

There are other threads here discussing issues with service techs/dealers not having/finding/acknowledging/understanding this TSB and these new trucks. It seems prudent that we should all be armed with info before going to a dealer until their knowledge level improves.

I hope it helps fix your problems. Please, let us know what you find out.

I been looking at a 6. 7 for a while but the first thing i'm going to do is remove every smoke catcher can on the truck all the way up to the intake. I even know that you can p pump it also.

Your DPF is most likely cracked internally. Soot particules are supposed to be too large to flow through the DPF, if you see black smoke out of the exhaust pipe then the soot particules are getting through the DPF and the most common problem I have seen is a cracked DPF. LSD fuel will lower the life span of your DPF.
