Fuel

This my first diesel and my first Dodge, I see people talking about defueling in some of theses threads. Could some one explain to me what they are talking about?

Thanks for the feedback.

That means the ECM (computer) reduces the amount of fuel being injected.

Maybe someone with more knowledge about diesels can chime in with a more complete explaination.

RRoton has it correct. The computer (ECM) or aftermarket box will control the amount of fuel being fed to the engine via the injector. De-fueling is simply that. The cause for the de-fueling is usually a preventitive measure to prevent damage caused by high exhaust gas temperatures (EGT) (Pyro). There may be a tranmission slippage sensor do but I can't say for sure. I've got a manual. Don't know about the automatics.

And in a diesel engine, fuel is everything. There is no throttle plate like you're used to on a gas engine. The intake is wide open all the time. Engine speed is completely controlled by the amount of fuel delivered.

There is a defuelling point in the mechanical pumped engines as well. The engine defuels to slow down the run to the governor, and to prevent overheating, overspeeding (engine, not truck), and pump and engine damage. You'll know when you hit it; it suddenly loses its pull and feels like a PSD or Dmax until you grab another gear and mash down again.
