Petition for the Award of Military Honors

Whereas, passengers and crew aboard commercial airliners were taken against

their will by terrorists on Tuesday, the 11th of September, 2001; and to the

best of their abilities, sacrificing their lives, took what action they

could to thwart the acts of war perpetrated by those terrorists, and

Whereas, brave rescue workers, fire fighters, and peace officers in New York

City and at the Pentagon were called out or volunteered on Tuesday, the 11th

States of America.

Therefore, in accordance with the provisions of 10 USC Sec. 311, we the

undersigned, request that they be considered as having been called to active

duty under Title 10 of the United States Code, retroactive to 0900 EST 11

I agree except for one little detail----If this petition is granted the victims of this act of terrorism no longer have life insurance---If I had been killed in this disaster I would much rather have my wife and 2 small children recieve my life ins. then a metal or ribbon for the scrapbook!!!

Good point Harley152!

Insurance benefits are MUCH better than ribbons.

Insurance companys WON'T pay off in any acts of war.

It hasn't been declared an Act of War yet, best to not get peoples' benefits cut off.

Besides, didn't Congress already bestow civilian Heroism status on all of the people involved?

So, this is about money?!!!!!

The President has asked for, and will receive, authorization for relief and grievance funds to the families of victims of the 91101 rape of America. The unselfish heroism and total disregard for the well-being of their own lives exhibited by the people of which we speak, certainly deserves the eternal honor and thanks of the American people. The Pennsylvania crashes are living proof of the unselfishness of these poor souls.

Will a million dollars bring them back? How about a billion?

This is about patriotism and care for our fellow human beings. This is not about insurance settlements. We are all indebted to their families, and they will probably never know the end of our gratitude. Not spiritually, and not financially.

While you are correct in this, A good friend of mine works for Prudential and says that even if this is to be considered an act of war, no one would be denied their insurance policies. The fallout of bad PR would be more devastating than the price of all of the policys combined:) .

I'm sorry, but I have to disagree....

As a member of the military, I don't think that would be appropriate. There are civilian awards and recognition that the President has available to (and most definately should) bestow on these people. NYC and D. C. both have, I'm sure, awards in their systems to bestow on the brave and selfless people who have earned them. For those members of the military involved in the Pentagon efforts, they will receive the appropriate military awards but not the civilian ones. If any of the passengers or crew of the flights were military/reserves, then they will be nominated for the appropriate awards.

Also, you need some kind of proof of the action to bestow an award. Just being a victim does not make someone deserving of an award, no matter how tragic the circumstances. From what I've seen on the news (taken with a grain of salt, of course) there are at least 3 passengers on the jet that went down in PA that took direct action and we can verify that.

Anything less lessens the award for anyone who has previously earned it, the current awardees and future ones as well. I, for one, will not sign this petition. And I suspect that Congress (NYC, DC and DoD) does not need any impetus for awarding any and all medals, honors and other recognition that is due.
