"Your Cummins 24 valve Turbo Diesel does not require a normal break-in period due to its construction" it further states 'Because of the construction of the Cummins Diesel engine, engine run in is enhanced by loaded operating conditions which allow the engine parts to achieve final finish and fit during the first 6k miles"

I am at 5K and don't have anything to tow,so I am wondering if loading the bed with sand and driving up some local grades will achieve the final fit and finish Cummins mentions?
How much longer does does it take to break-in if not worked hard in the first 6K?
I read someone that claimed 25K longer? Thanks.

"i took delivery of mine and strapped an 11k 5th wheel to the back of it and drove it from SC to NJ at highway speed.since i only move my rv 3 or 4 times a year mine did not break in in 6k miles, it was more like 25k miles. it was like getting a new truck when it finally started to wear in. if just got stronger and stronger for about 5k miles. today the engine is stonger than when i was new.

Hi and welcome to the forum.

Per Cummins none of the ISB 5.9L or 6.7L engines need breaking in just drive them normal and you will be fine. The only item on the Ram truck that needs to be broken for durability is the differential to insure proper tooth mesh of the ring gear and pinion. This will occur in the first 500 miles at least this was what was stated in my owner’s manual.

Now fuel mileage will improve over time on your engine I know that my truck saw improved fuel mileage after 10K and continued to improve a little bit after that.

Go get a pallet of bagged sand from a home improvement place, load it in your truck, drive as you mentioned to a place where you can work the engine for a couple weeks. When done return the sand for a refund. Or sell the sand to somebody that is putting in a sand box. Or keep it for the winter. Better than Salt on Ice.

Drive it like you stole it!

ZACTLY!!!!!

Dave Smith Service Manager told me to run the hell out of my 11. I did right out of the box. Full throttle up I-90 and exhaust brake on down there grades. Did you know my truck tops out at 104MPH at 2,300RPM?
