Hey you 2nd gen(94-97) 12v 5spd truck owners. Next time a couple you guys are under your truck, take a look at the clutch slave cylinder and post on here if it's made of plastic or metal.
I was suprised to see my 99 and 00 trucks have a plastic slave cylinders, but I sure don't remember my 96 V8 5spd truck having a plastic one.

Texas finally has a right answer ! Yes it is plastic, and Dodge wants $300 if you break it!
My feeling is, someone out there should have a good unit with braided line and an HD cylinder.
I am sure one of the Scourges has been looking into this, it just has not been top priority.

It's been plastic since 1989. Had a single rear wheel D350 with the Getrag and it had the plastic slave also. The line was / held in with a roll oin that was not hard enough. Wore on one side allowing the fluid to leak under pressure (clutch depressed).

Even back in 1989, it was only available as a unit from the factory.

Thanks guys, that's what I wanted to find out.
I figured since I'll have the transmission out,I'd replace the plastic slave cylinder with a metal one from a different year, but I guess not.
Chevs' used the NV trannies in their older trucks. I'll have to find out what slaves they use.

MikeR, keep us posted on what you find. I believe my slave cylinder has not been healthy since new because my 6-speed is considerably harder to shift than your's or Evan's. It has the exact same symptoms my Bronco had when the clutch slave deteriorated on it. Always takes a lot of effort to get into 1st, 2nd, and Reverse. Sometimes first is almost impossible even after going into 2nd first. I asked the dealer to look into it, and the service report says "disengages at proper position. " Well it can appear to disengage at the proper point, yet not completely disengage enough to let the input shaft slow down or stop, causing difficult gear engagement.

When my slave cylinder gave up (just after the #3 clutch went in) I tried to purchase the slave only through NAPA. They didn't have a listing for my "98 so we tried the most logical PN that fit the latest model they DID list. No go. I had to purchase the slave/clutch master cylinder for around $160 from Dodge. Yup, the before and after were the cheesy plastic versions.
