A Smaller Cummins Engine

When will Cummins Engine Company and the Auto industry work together to build a heavy duty SUV designed around an in-line 5Cyl or 6Cyl turbo diesel, less than 300cu. in. displacement, for those of us who do not need RAW power and 600Ft Lbs of torque. A 4X4 or AWD vehicle capable of commuting @ 25-30MPG, with snow and icy road navigation an added bonus. It should be off road capable. Something similar to a land rover, landcruiser, Expedition, Durango, Yukon or a new concept, with higher quality and reliability than any of those mentioned. Dodge has their Sprinter van with a 5Cyl turbo diesel but it is not a Cummins, nor is it 4X4 capable and it has a very high profile. Any discussion? GregH

I agree with you. I'm just hoping that the upcoming V-6 Cummins will be available in the Ram 1500, as well as the V-8 Cummins for those who want to tow. The horsepower and torque figures for the V-6 Cummins are sufficient for my needs and should offer better fuel economy. I am sure that the V-6 will be only for the Dakota, however.

Thanks for the info. Read this also. Not enough of an increase in fuel mileage. Poor reliability history on Chrysler Mfgd. jeeps. GregH.

I have been thinking of putting a 3. 9L Cummins in a Wrangler. Jeep won't offer me a diesel Wrangler, so I'll have to do my own!

That sounds like an idea. Will the drivetrain components handle that setup? I remember in the late 60's that the Jeep CJ? was offered with a Perkins diesel option. GregH

I would say it will be fine. The 4. 0L gasser is no slouch itself and quite a tough engine. I just want to do this (If I do) to have a fuel efficient and different vehicle. The engines are close in displacement. I am sure they are similar in power or can be made to be. I have really not done much actual research on the idea, just have had the thought... Would have to come up with a vehicle (with a man. trans. ) and the necessary accessories. I have access to an engine.

DC is talking about putting the 4. 2 V6's in the 4-door Wrangler JK's. It's not confirmed yet, though.

I would be interested in that if Cummins makes it, but not if it is a Mercedes V-6. Loyal Cummins man here!
