I want to take my kids up into the Adirondaks for a few days in August, most likely Lake George, but I want to drive around too. They are 5 and 8 and I know there are some theme parks around. I'd like to hear some real life experiences and what to avoid. My wife would prefer to stay in a traditional hotel and would want access to the lake for splashing. We are not campers- yet.

Thanks! Oo.

There is a lot to do inb Lake George itswelf and several really nice motels in town. I have not been there in a long time, but, there is a steamboat ride. The steamboat is authentic and built on lake George. There are also a couple fo bigger boats. I believe they have parasailing.

You can drive to Ticonderoga and take the ferry across to Vermont and visit the marble company.

Shane you aren't a camper. Camping in the adirondaks is great.

I grew up in those parts.

Lake George is nice, but it is really touristy. Not the "real" Adirondacks.

That said, expect to play premium $$ for everything. Hotels may require a 2 night minimum stay, restaurants are only open seasonly, so they need to maximize their profits during the summer. Traffic and parking can be a nightmare.

There is a theme park between Lake George and Glens Falls.

Gore Mountain, one of the large ski resorts, does gondola sight seeing rides to the top of the mountain in the summer isn't too far away.

If you venture up into the high peeks area, Lake Placid has some interesting things to do. Don't forget, the Adirondack Museum in Blue Mountain. There is also a new museum in Tupper Lake.

There is a big water park in Old Forge. Near Old Forge there is also a nice, relatively easy, mountain to climb, Bald Mountain. It is fun but not too hard.

Just 30-45 minutes drive south of Old Forge is a small community called Forestport. There is a restaurant at Forestport Station call the "Buffalo Head". It is not much to look at, but the food is fantastic (steaks, prime rib, seafood, and the coconut creme pie is to die for).

Thank You, keep 'em coming!

Has anyone been here

Lake George Motel

I was looking to land at a place like this to unwind for a couple days and then go up into the mountains overnight, hitting a couple of spots, seeing what to come back to, then head home. I've never been up there so this totally exploratory.

I have not stayed at the motel you mention so I can't help you there. Note, however, don't expect NYC luxury or ambiance. Accommodations are generally, VERY BASIC (especially for the price you pay).

If you're into craft/microbrew beers, I would recommend this place:

Lake George New York Adirondack Pub & Brewery

I haven't eaten there but I have tried their beers. Good stuff.
