A friend looking for a rv

Max Brake

I wanted to alert you guys to a potential issue with this coverage. As a disclaimer I have had AAA for 8 years and have been very satisfied with it. My wife, daughters, and I have used it for batteries, flat tires, 5th wheel blowouts and towing. However, I recently learned of an issue with dually trucks. AAA will not cover or change the inside rear tires. This makes no sense to me. Here's how the issue arose.

A friend of my wife was traveling in her Class C to a dog show in Asheville, NC and suffered a blowout on one of her inside rear tires. AAA refused to change it and put on the spare and offered instead to tow her rig (with all the dogs in it) to a repair facility-citing that their technicians lacked the special knowledge to do so. She declined and called another service to change the tire for almost $300.

I found this to be incredible and wandered the AAA website and member brochure and found nothing that excluded this from coverage. The next day I called AAA and spoke to the Roadside Assistance folks. They confirmed that they will not cover the inside tire on any dually period. Even if it is just sitting in your driveway. They will instead tow the truck and if necessary the trailer to a repair facility. Again, this representative cited lack of technical knowhow!

I mentioned to the representative that the same 8 lugs hold both tires, and I couldn't undertand the policy. When I added RV coverage 8 years ago this is not what I thought I was buying. I bought it because my wife is not capable of changing any of the tires on any of the vehicles or the 5th wheel. I can, but at times because of circumstances, I may not. I would have been surprised and angry to learn this the hard way.

My wife was taking our Class C to the same show in Asheville, and I wanted to be sure that my wife had adequate assistance if necessary. Consequently, I went with Good Sam-Platium plus. I spoke extensively to the representative before purchasing it to be sure it covered what I needed. Noone there had heard about the same issue with them. Now, I'm not necessarily trashing AAA and promoting GS, but not changing a tire is an issue with me and may be an issue of which many are unaware. AAA will tow it and the trailer to a facility where presumably you can pay for the service. In my wife's case towing a vehicle full of dogs is unacceptable and in my mind unnecessary.

Knowledge is king!

Thanks for the head's up! I can report from experience that USAA's Roadside Assist continues to change the inside duallies. I have lately made it a practice to carry my generator, air-compressor and impact wrench even though it's aggravating. My 15" ST tires on the fiver are approaching the five-year limit and I intend to get them replaced ASAP. In the meantime I pay particular attention to the TST-TPMS and keep the speed below 65 MPH.

The one time I needed AAA I waited 2 hours and no one showed up. I looked at good Sam but they wouldn't do anything with my horse trailer. I ended up going with us rider. They will cover any vehicle that I'm in plus the fifth wheel and horse trailer. They will even arrange for care of horses if needed. Haven't had to use it yet but a good friend lost the motor on her 13 ford while pulling her lq trailer had a great experience with them. She lost a rod bearing on her 6.7 powerjoke and got a new engine. A tow truck and a dually pickup got to her location within 45 minutes to tow her truck and trailer.

I had AAA RV+ for many years and the one time I was in a position where I couldn't be towed because my black tank dropped down on the ground they wouldn't even find a mobile RV repair that I was willing to totally pay for and cost AAA nothing. Good Sam had a mobile repair call within 15 minutes and I didn't have GS roadside coverage. Guess who got dropped and who now gets my money.

For an RV, I would highly recommend either CoachNet or Good Sam Roadside Assistance over AAA Roadside Assistance. Both of these roadside assistance services specialize in RVs and know what is required to do tire changes, tow them to a service facility, etc. They will even remove, dismount and replace a 22.5" tire from a motorhome on the side of the road if necessary (and it usually is since few, if any, of these motorhomes carry mounted spare tires.)

Don't these companies just call a local to where you are tow service? Doesn't make sense that they would have such a policy if all they have to do is call the proper service company.

Yes, but the difference is that CoachNet and Good Sam maintain lists of local companies that they have qualified to handle RVs. AAA sells RV coverage, but reports from those have used it are that (1.) results are spotty and (2.) services are sometimes unavailable outside one's home state. Take it for what it's worth, and caveat emptor.

So I have a road side assistance with my auto/truck policy and just assumed it would cover tire changes on the RV as its covered under a rider on the truck policy... I think this is an important point... thanks for bringing it up.... I did loose a belt on the truck and when I called for the tow told the road side assistance I had 32 ft 5er attached to the truck and they sent 2 tow trucks... one to tow the truck and the second to tow the trailer... they only took me 5 miles off the freeway where I found a parts store and bought a belt... but it was 5 miles I wouldn't have made with the 5er...

For years, I had AAA, only had to use it one time to tow one of our previous fifth wheels. The leaf springs on the single axle fifth wheel broke. They sent a tow truck that strapped down the axle in place and put the trailer on roller skates and I continued to tow it with my own truck back home since we were 15 miles from home. Used them another few times to tow our vehicles over the years but never any thing else with the fifth wheel.

The last time I renewed, I happened to ask what happens if we're out with the truck and trailer and we need a tow? Does the truck and trailer each get towed to the same location? Apparently at the time, our RV coverage meant that the RV would go up to 200 miles but the truck would only get towed 7 miles. The cost to upgrade so both would have the increased tow distance put the AAA cost at about $180.00, almost 3 times the cost of Good Sam. I have let the AAA lapse and have towing on my car insurance policy and each of the cars have manufacturer road side but I plan to get Good Sam to cover teh truck and trailer since we are already Coast to Coast members.

I heard back from my agent today... they don't care what kind of vehicle they supply road service for... their program provides 2 hours of road service labor, change a tire, wire up the muffler, change a battery, bring fuel (you have to pay for the fuel) etc... if they can't solve it they tow it... so I learned something today... thanks for sharing...

I have a follow on question for you guys. What if you are in an out of the way place? Say Calfiornia desert, or on your way to Alaska? What happens then? Does anyone cover that kind or roadside service? Ken Irwin

I locked the keys in the truck in Arches NP. I had to climb up high to get cell service. Coach Net had some one out there in 40 minutes from Moab.

We are very happy with Coach Net.

I had a road service program from (2) different companies on a Motorcycle... (Goldwing) and had a tire failure 20 miles into Alaska from Canada on the Alcan Highway.... I had a specific mile post... after 2 hours of calls and no one could understand there were no towns within 50 miles of my location and that I needed a flatbed tow truck I gave up... we loaded the wing on a Semi and paid the guy to take me to the next town... Later gave a bill to both road service programs... both wouldn't pay... I never found out if they would have found me... or would have gotten me service in time for me to make the Ferry.. my way worked..

Ken, at some point, regardless of the policy and the provider, you will be at the mercy of the wind and the waves. If for no other reason than the time factor, I think we would all have to agree that having basic tools, a plan, and being physically able to roll up our sleeves with the knowledge and ability to attack the problem is the last recourse. The Good Samaritan is the unknown in the equation, and he can be straight from Heaven....or Hell!

Sorry, but I've been on the side of the road waiting for help, without the proper tools, with only my close friend Dr. Glock, when the Bad Samaritan came along. I never again wish to subject my wife and myself to that situation; and, I'm quite sure that the Bad Samaritan would prefer to avoid that type of confrontation in the future. - Ed

Good Sam's ERS or Coachnet are two of the best for campers. They'll send two tow vehicles if necessary and will tow your truck or 5er, or both to nearest service center that can repair whichever needs work done.

As far as out of the way places, I was in the middle of nowhere, Pence Springs WV with a river rising very fast and got stuck trying to get my 5er off the lot....I called Coachnet, gave them GPS co-oridnates and with only about 2 hrs of day light left, a very large wrecker showed up, put his out riggers down, had me hook to my 5er, he hooked his winch to my tow hooks (when I had the 2010 Ram 3500 dually and winched me and the 5er off the lot....Earned my business....They will deliver fuel, do trip routing for you, change out flats (inside rears on dually's also), do unlocks and really not much of a limit when it comes to towing your truck, your rv or both.....for $89 to $109 a year it's a great deal and they'll tow any other vehicle you own also....I have Coachnet and will use it for as long as I'm towing a 5er...

(oh, I alway's have my Glock Gen4 9mm...I don't leave home without that either:)

OK guys,
I have never had any roadside assistance plan, but now at 76 years young, perhaps I should get one.
And, my assistant is only a Smith&W 38. Perhaps I need to upgrade that too.

I would look at Good Sams ERS, covers all your vehicles, will also tow both tow vehicle and whatever it is you're towing....Same for Coachnet....The .38 is substantial, but the Glock with 15 in the clip firing as fast as I can pull the trigger seems to give me a little more "peace of mind":-laf
