Alright, where are you guys with AAM 11. 5 Mag Hi Tec diff covers running the level?.

Are you filling them up until it comes out the reference hole?, or using the reference point between the two notches on the dip stick?. They are two different levels .

Fill mine right to the top mark on the dipstick, just a bit shy of 8 qts. Run this truck hard and heavy, no leaks yet!! ;)

Alright, got hold of the folks at Mag Hi Tech (their close to me)talked to a guy named Jerry. He said to run her up to the top notch (right at 8 quarts).

I guess the hole in the center of the cover isn't a reference point at all, it's left over from "tooling".

I believe that port is for a temperature sending unit/probe.

I run mine between the two marks, closer to the top. Just under 8 quarts. The hole in the center isn't the temperature probe one. There is another one for a temperature probe. It is slightly above the fill/dipstick hole, near the top.

Front

I don't. . they didn't have one when I bought the rear. I've seen comments on here to the effect that they exist, but has anyone actually got a Mag-Hytec FRONT cover ?

I was told they should be out real soon, if not already.

I am sure that M/H told you to run it at the top line, but my question is how they got to this level. I called and finally talked to an english speaking person that was not rude on my fourth attempt. I wanted to know how they arrived at this point and what was the advantages over the stock fill level. The "boss" and I do not remember his name, did not really know why they had this level. I question the wisdom in filling an inch and a half more than stock level on the diff. Why would AAM not put the level here if it is better? Would there be foaming problems? I like the extra capacity from a larger cover, but I wonder about flooding the ring gear half way up.

I fill to the bottom of the axle tubes +/-. I think this is about stock level and it takes about 6 1/2 or 7 quarts. This is near the bottom "safe" mark. Now let me climb of my soap box before I fall and twist an ankle.

I was told by MH that the hole (w/ plug) in the ID plate in the center of the cover indicates the "stock (factory)" level.

The lower level on the dipstick puts the gear oil just inside the bottom of the axle tube.

The higher level on the dipstick places the gear oil level at the bottom of the axle, inside the axle tube.

That is some good info. Had they told me the same thing, I would have had more confidence in their recommended fill levels.

PML front diff covers work well.

In issue 50 page 80 of the Nov/Dec/Jan TDR they go through a step by step installation. They also recommend to fill it (11. 5 AAM) with eight quarts as well (top notch of the dipstick). I took the truck to work this morning 25 miles on the freeway and crawled under to check the level and didn't notice any emulsion (foaming) at all on the dip stick.

As far as the front 9. 25 AAM I installed a PML diff cover at the same time as I installed the rear Mag Hi Tec. It doesn't hold as much as the front M/H found on the model 60 Dana as is available on the second genners, however I don't feel it is necessary.

The PML went on with no problems and holds around a half a quart more over the stock diff cover, and comes with a magnetic drain plug ;). real nice.
