I was going to change the front & rear axle oil in my 06 2500 QCSB 4x4 Diesel. I bought some Lucus synthetic 75-90 lube, but am confused about the fluid level. In issue 66 of the TDR page 55 their is a bulletin about the axle fill holes being in the wrong place and if you fill it to the hole you could overfill the axle, causing foaming. The model on the bulletin is for the 1/2 ton truck, but it lists fluid levels for the 2500/3500 below the bulletin? so what gives, can I fill the axles to the fill hole or what? Bulletin lists 76oz front 122oz rear, is this correct?

Fill right to the bottom of the fill hole, with the anti foaming agents thats are in most synthetics ,you need not to worry.

Fill to the bottom of the fill hole, and you'll be fine.

This TSB is what the article was probably referencing, which is from 2004. Your 2006 is not a part of it.

My 06 has a line on the rear cover that indicates the level. It is a ways down from the filler plug. When the truck was new, I had a right rear wheel seal failure at 4,000 miles. When I took it in for replacement the tech (who I know very well) said that rear axle was overfilled and that was the cause of the seal failure. When he got it back together he painted the mark in the cover so that I could see it.

They covered it under warranty and had found some overfilled from the factory as mine was. I gave them some good natured grief for not checking mine during the P. D. I. :-laf

Just have a look and see if yours has the line. It is only on the rear axle cover, front cover does not have it.

92,000 miles with no more seal trouble, he may have been right. I have changed the fluid a couple times since and stuck with filling it only to the line.

The rear is filled to the fill hole, but the front appears to be low. i can't reach any fluid with my pinky finger, that is why I was wondering.
