Will or should the actual wear pattern on the ring gear match the pattern obtained during the orignal gear installation? If not, in what way would it be different?

I have a set of gears that are making noise on my new truck. I pulled the cover and the wear pattern on the drive side is off the heel with the pattern starting well away from the toe. The coast side is the opposite with the wear pattern off the toe. The wear pattern is also biased away from the root with the wear pattern off the edge of the tooth. From everthing I've been told, the pattern should be centered. I also have strange radial lines on the pinion that are at about a 45º angle.

I think the pinion is set too low and with excessive backlash. I know it's difficult to visualize, but any input/opinions would be appreciated.

from what u describe it sounds right that the pinion may be in to far. but without consulting my notes i keep im not sure. I can tell u that any attempt to redo those gears will be a waist of time. the noise will never go away now even if you get them set right.

found this on the net didnt read it but it looks like it will tell you how to interpret gear pattern... . gear pattern interpretation
