ABF U-Pack moving carriers....

Has any one used this moving service---> ABF U-Pack



Seems hassle free and much cheaper for the spcace than P. O. D. S.



Opinions/ comments?

This moving service is basicaly a semi- trailer that is dropped off at the moving source with a 2 day load- in, then driven to the destination for a 2 day load- out. Fill the trailer as needed then install a bulkhead wall. The remaining is loaded as a commercial carrier.

I've never used them to move... I've shipped millions with them at work, and to my memory, I can't remember ever having even ONE problem with a shipment.

I have looked in to using them for my current move. So far have not needed to use them but might. I also looked at PODS and they are too expensive for the size.



I am using my truck and a trailer.

PODS dont have decent tie-offs, if this other sys has slats or e-trak to secure your goods it has to be better.

Reading the ABF website, they state that one can nail blocking to the floor! I was thinking of using a screw gun for ease of removal.

If necessary, you may use blocks and braces throughout the loading process. These can be nailed to the floor of the trailer and are helpful in preventing shifting. You can also use screwable hooks and eyes to assist in tying down your shipment. As a final step, you will want to protect your shipment from becoming dusty by covering it with large sheets of plastic. Plastic sheets are cheap, easy to find and definitely worth purchasing for extra protection.

I looked at them when we had to move my father in-law from Macon Ga to PA.



It sounded great but would not work for what we were doing.



they wanted 5 days for delevery (which is OK), but I would have Father In-law there in 2 days, to an empty house.



I found out about them to late, we would have had to postpone the move, and we had brothers/sisters coming from several different states that weekend to help.



So we fit him into a U-hual truck which I drove while my Wife got to drive the CTD (I had to keep calling her on the radio, "show down! this Ferd U-hual ain't safe at that speed!"

A friend of mine use ABF to move from upstate NY to Florida. It worked out great for him. He stated it was far less $$ than renting a large Penski/Ryder/U-Haul for a one-way trip.



I helped him pack and load the truck on this end. The trailer comes with a built-in ramp as do most of the rental trucks. We filled it, put the bulkhead into place and he was charge for the linear footage he used. ABF fills the remaining area with some other common-carrier goods and it hits the road.



On the other side, they drop off the trailer and pick it up after you unload it.



From my observations it is probably one of the most ecomonical ways to move if you a do-it-your-self type.

I used that service to move from MA to WI back in '03...

We used like 10' out of the box (from floor to ceiling) so it was only like $990. Renting a truck and trailor would have cost me like $2200.



I would definitely do it again. The only downside is that we had to wait like 2 days before our stuff showed up.

Our neighbors across the street moved from NY to TX using the ABF U-Pack service. To the best of my knowledge, they were satisfied with it.

I helped a buddy move from CT to CA. We loaded up a large U-Haul, took it to ABF and transferred everything into a trailer. To the roof and tightly packed. Then they nailed in a partition. We drove across the country, and about another week later the trailer arrived. He went with another U-Haul to bring it home. Very satisfied and fairly priced. He had tons of very heavy boxes with books and similar items. So shipping the stuff wasn't really an option. Hope this helps.
