Hey Guys,

I just recently started hearing an extra noise when I shift. I have the usual loud -pssshhh- sound that I got when I added the straight pipe and now I have a -skkeerr- sound in addition. Any ideas. I did notice a groove in the turbo last time I changed the oil. Not really a groove but a scratch from what looks like the compressor fin. I'm not sure how much shaft play is acceptable but it did have some side to side. How about a boost leak? Thanks Clay

Ouch, sounds to me like your turbo is worn out and the compressor wheel is contacting the housing. I would take the inlet pipe off the turbo and then spin the compressor wheel with your fingers and at the same time apply lateral pressure to it. See if you feel any drag from the compressor making contact with the housing. Keep in mind that even if you cant feel any drag from contact, you are spinning slowly and applying negligible pressure on the shaft comparative to what can be present at 100,000 rpm's or turbo speed- especially if your turbo is slightly out of balance. Another thing to inspect for is damaged fins (i. e. small pieces missing, ends worn off etc).

Im not saying thats all it could be but thats my take on the sound, your description reminds me of the sound the 3116 Cat diesel on our wrecker at work made when the turbo wore out.

Just my . 02 dollars

If the turbo is trash, where would be a good place to buy a factory replacement? Maybe a TDR member has their factory one laying around.

Well, TDR members are a good place to start, as is EBay if you trust that sort of thing. Those are two good places to get a reasonable price. Also something to consider - if youre mechanically inclined - is that some on the TDR here have had good luck with rebuilding their turbo's using a kit that i beleive costs about 68. 00, that is, if there are no REAL hard parts on your turbo damaged. That said, maybe someone else will chime in with a good place for a factory replacement.

I've never rebuilt a turbo before. I assume I need some special tools. If the kit came with instructions I could do it. I'd rather buy an upgrade but that means injectors and clutch to go with it. Anybody else have any suggestions about the noise. Is it possible that it's a boost leak? Power seems to be OK and no additional smoke. Thanks for the response JRichard.

The book says the max radial runout is . 0195" but if its rubbin I would park it. Guys pleease correct me if Im wrong but it its so loose the impeller is hitting the case sooner or later its going to explode or the oil seal will fail and let the engine run away. Either way its going to be expensive.
