Abolishing Bathtubs

Not a giant leap.

Daschle & Kennedy Call for Abolition of Bathtubs Washington, D. C. (CNN) — In the wake of the tragic and horrifying drowning of five children by their mother Andrea Yates in the bathtub of their Houston home, Democratic Senators Tom Daschle and Ted Kennedy have called for making home bath tubs illegal. "How many children have to die before we accept the fact that bath tubs are a major cause of death in the home," Kennedy said. He cited Consumer Product Safety Commission data which confirms that bathtubs are now one of the 5 leading causes of home accidental deaths.

"It may very well be that if this severely depressed mother had not had ready access to a bathtub, these 5 innocent children might still be alive today," Kennedy added at the somber Washington press conference. He was surrounded by representatives from a wide range of liberal organizations including People for the American Way, Children's Defense Fund, and Bathtub Control, Inc.

Daschle and Kennedy also called for an immediate doubling of National Institute of Health funding for post-partum depression. "We've been ignoring the cries for help of these horribly depressed women for too long," said National Organization for Women president Patricia Ireland. Mrs. Yates is "as much a victim as a criminal in this sad incident," she observed. Ireland also said that this incident only underscores the fact that America remains a "patriarchal society" where women are forced to rear children at home "isolated" and without "any support networks from government or the community. " "This situation where women are imprisoned at home with their children is the worst possible kind of child-care arrangement for mother and child. "

Mrs. Yates made her first public appearance this morning on The Today Show. In her usual probing, but empathetic manner, Katie Couric asked: "Mrs. Yates, after you drowned your five children, how did that make you feel?"

Kennedy and Daschle pledged that they would launch a series of Senate hearings on bathtub-related deaths, and were greeted by thunderous applause by many of the consumer-advocate groups in attendance. People don't drown children, bathtubs do," Ralph Nader noted. "We intend to do to bathtubs in this decade what we did to Corvairs in the 1960s: abolish them. " Marian Wright Edelman weighed in by noting that it will do very little good to "get handguns out of the home, if people still have access to bathtubs that are statistically about as dangerous. "

The American Trial Lawyers Association says that it will set in motion a $6 billion class-action liability suit against the "rapacious and irresponsible" bathtub producers for selling these "weapons of destruction. "

Activist groups chimed in that a ban on bathtubs would have collateral societal benefits. The Sierra Club issued a press release noting that "bathtubs needlessly waste gallons of water every day" and that the optimal "green policy" would be for Americans to take showers, not baths, and preferably not every day. "

Sen. Phil Gramm of Texas ridiculed the Daschle-Kennedy bill, saying: "Rather than just ban bathtubs from homes, why not ban water and modern plumbing. "

Daschle ended the news conference by declaring: "After Andrea Yates drowned her 5 kids in that bathtub she called 911 and confessed with great remorse: 'I Killed My Children. ' But it wasn't just this poor tortured mother, but each and every one of us in society who were co-conspirators in this senseless death and I will work tirelessly on legislation to make sure that this kind of tragedy never happens again. "

Author's note: After writing this parody, I asked my research assistant to do a search of commentaries on Ms. Yates monstrous act of filicide. I was astonished to find that this is hardly even a parody of the left's reaction to the murders. If you want to be especially sickened, read Anna Quindlen's rant against society and stress in the current Newsweek. Her column is so over the top, at the end she is forced to write as an afterthought: "Don't get me wrong, I'm not making excuses, for Andrea Yates. " Sure.

Maybe we should abolish all canals, rivers, and creeks in the US. After all, how many of Ted Kennedy's girlfriends have died in them?

ABOLISH TED KENNEDY! Free country? Many are in denile of the simple fact that we are losing sight of the truth.

Take a moment out of your day and think about this freedom thing. You can do so when you are taking a bath while cleaning your "assault" weapon, getting ready to have your state emmisions test, and getting frustrated at you childrens mis behavoir due to a lack of much needed, now illegal, disapline!

Silly retoric? think again!

Ted Kennedy's driving has killed more people than many decades of NRA conventions.

More people have died carrying Ted Kennedy's child than Charlton Heston has killed with his guns...

It's more dangerous to be Ted Kennedy's bed partner than to scream "I hate guns" at an NRA convention.

After analyzing these facts, Democrats have determined that we need more Ted Kennedy's and to ban guns.

Does anyone notice that Democrats do NOT have people's best interest at heart, only power to control thier lives? Shall we all ride the Democrat train over the Chappaquidic bridge?

With all due respect, I think you're a little narrow here. I think many, if not most, federal politicians (and even federal bureaucrats) have only their own interests at heart. Serving the people just doesn't fit in their scheme. Getting re-elected at any cost does fit. This attitude crosses all party boundaries.

Sigh.

When the Democrat's party platform can be summed up as follows:

"Give the federal, state, and local governments all your money, let them make all your decisions, and control every aspect of your property, economic and medical aspects of your life",

they deserve the criticism shot their way and more.

The democratic party has become nothing more than an endless rant for more: Taxes, regulation, spending, control.

and less: liberty, prosperity, and self sufficiency.

There is no problem facing the american people collectively or individually that the DNC does not promote a government spending, taxing, regulation, or banning program to fix. There is no problem or need so small that the Democrats will not propose a federal program to "solve" it for you. There is no limit to how much government they want imposed upon the ill-used, overtaxed, over-regulated, and brainwashed citizenry. I have never heard of a Democrat in recent history getting his party to suggest that government has grown too large, and does too many things, things that the people should do for themselves, like, find jobs, get an education, pay thier doctor bills, or even choose thier own medical care.

This isn't to say that the other party is presently on an particularly virtuous course, except to say that at least they don't make what I am so stridently opposed to the basic tenet of thier party's philosophy. In my view, I'm not taking a 'narrow' view of the party, I'm nailing it dead on for precisely what it IS, not what SAYS it is.

And, please understand... I'm talking about a political party, made up of leading politicians and other influential people, who run the business of the organization and direct the efforts of it's resources - and not necessarily people who belong to it for one reason or another and/or have long historical ties to it. I just know I could not, in good conscience EVER support the policies espoused at present.

Well its obvious that what really needs to be done is to ban women then this kinda thing cant happen, eventually you will see less and less child abuse and after 20 years or so there wont be any child abuse at all. Hmmm maybe that wont work after all.

DID YOU SAY TED KENNEDY WILL BE POLISHING BATHTUBS! ITS ABOUT TIME THAT GUY DOES SOMETHING WORTHWHILE, BUT SHOULD HE BE TRUSTED AROUND WATER?

Its for the money and power. Why else would any politicians (or federal bureaucrats) spend hundreds of thousand or millions of dollars for a low paying job. Big egos require big bucks. Just look at their retirement and insurance plans. Best to be had anywhere. Only the taxpayer loses.

He's perfect enough for me, and it looks like he uses his bath tub for relaxing while reading
