Hi guys, over thanksgiving I took my old mans truck for a spin to get a fuel filter since he hadn't changed it in 80,000 miles (no kiddin) on that drive it smoked horribly at any rpm while under acceleration. Then when we put the new filter on it stopped. We were both puzzled what an old filter would have to do with getting to much fuel. It seems fine now, but I am still curious why an old filter would do that. Truck is 93 4x4 five speed.

Hmmmm, you got me too... . maybe it's not "too much fuel" but dirty contaminated fuel... either way, BONUS !! you fixed it... . it is curious though...

Also, based on your description, I'd run a good dose or two of conditioner thru the system for good measure. .

This also happened to my dads 93 once. The filter plugged up and started belching smoke w/ no power. I think it may have to do w/ starving for fuel so therefore sucking/pumping air in the fuel system and having low fuel pressure to feed the injection pump??? Kurt

Well what really throws me off was it wasn't running any worse powerwise. In fact the truck seemed to be running better since I had driven it a few months ago. So I asked my dad if he had let anyone work on his truck while he wasn't around, but he didn't think so. The truck seems to be running better than it ever has since he got it in 97. I am wondering if something could have been stuck in his pump, like a centrifugal advance or something and suddenly released itself?? It's really weird, but I guess it's a good problem to have.
