35 MPG and $1.27 a gallon diesel

Aux fuel tank slosh

http://www.cnn.com/2003/TECH/science/03/06/show.diesel.reut/index.html

"I think the American consumer is ready for diesel," said Jim Schroer, head of sales and marketing for the Chrysler Group, the U. S. arm of DaimlerChrysler AG. I wonder if he figured that out all by himself?

DaimlerChrysler will launch two diesel vehicles in the U. S. market next year as an option on the Jeep Liberty sport utility vehicle and on the Mercedes E-Class luxury sedan.

DaimlerChrysler's Mercedes chief Juergen Hubbert said the German brand aims to offer more optional diesels engines in the future. "

""There is a mindset in the U. S. that diesels are all tractor engines that clack away. That myth I think is exploding now. The diesel technology now is totally different than when GM tried to introduce diesel back in the 1980s. " INTRODUCE?!?!?! GM didnt introduce "diesel technology" they single-handedly KILLED the diesel market for 20 years!!

GM, which rushed poorly engineered diesels to market more than 20 years ago ( I wonder if we will be reading the same about the dura-whatever in 20 years ) in response to gas shortages, is considering more new generation diesels for fuel-thirsty sport utility vehicles, GM officials said. " Really? Imagine that!!

I work on diesels of all types, and so far, the DMax has proven to be quite reliable. Before you knock it too much, keep in mind it uses the SAME injection pump as the ISBe Cummins... :D

Too bad GM rushed everything back in the 80's. Things would be much different now. :)

I agree, too bad they rushed back in the 80's. I read somewhere that the GM / diesel / gasoline conversion engine was 30 days, concept to prototype. It was allegedly an Industry record ( it sure was  )

I didnt intend to imply the dura-whatever would be another GM failure in 20 years, I intended to say I wonder if it would be. I have some heard some pretty scarey stories about the failure rate of the dura-whatever, some second hand info and some first hand info. I also have had first hand experience with GM and first year models / engines and their infamous policy of releasing them before they are ready  I've had enough to NEVER buy a GM anything. Remember the old saying about Mr Goodwrench? Wait till the 3rd year of a model before gambling on "That GM feeling"? Most of the problems I have heard about were related to the heads and transmission, only one was about faulty injectors.
