This is my first truck and I'm use to dealing with cars repairs, So looking at replacing pretty much all my brakes, rubber brake lines, etc while I replace my hardlines that failed last week. How can I tell if I have 4 wheel ABS or 2 wheel ABS or none at all?

While doing some research, The 1999 dealer parts manual has the following listed :

BGJ=R.W.A.L.-Rear Wheel Anti-Lock Brakes
BGK= A.W.A.L.-All Wheel Anti-Lock Brakes
HCU= Hydralic Control Unit

I could not figure it out by looking at the VIN #. Any suggestions?

Rear abs is mounted on the rear diff not at each wheel. I'm almost 100 percent sure you should at least have that at a minimum. If you have front abs the sensors will be in the hubs at each front wheel. Not sure how to tell by the vin.

In 97, rear wheel ABS was standard and 4 wheel abs was an option. Your 99 should have a big abs module under the hood on the driver's side inner fender with a bunch of brake lines going into it, if you have 4 wheel abs.

Thanks for the info, This gives me a place to look. I saw the module. will look at it a little more. I figured it might have had some sensors on the wheels/hubs, but didnt see any wires. Will look closer in the morning.

thanks all

There is one sensor for the rear wheels and it is mounted in the top of the differential housing. Each front wheel has a sensor, you should see a rubber covered cable about 3/8" inch in diameter running to each hub. bg

So went under the truck for a couple mins to look around. I see a sensor of some type on top of the rear diff. Didnt go all the way under as the ground is soaked. I do not see any wires or anything going to the front hubs. Just a rubber hose for the brakes. Looking under the hood there is only a small module that looks to be a ABS module? So looks like I only have rear ABS.

Rear Diff ABS?

Nothing going to the calipers?

You would probably have to take the wheel off to actually see the front sensor but you should be able to see the wires going to it in the fender well. From the looks of the module you have rear abs only.

Looking in the factory parts catalog, I found the ABS module section and looks like the one I have is for BGJ (Rear ABS). Looks like 4 wheel ABS was an option for 1999 trucks also.

Time to order everything I can find now :)

If you open the hood and look up, there is usually a sticker that will tell you if it is 2or 4 wheel. With the serial number a dealer should be able to tell you.

Never noticed the sticker there, thanks for pointing is out! Stick does not seem to list ABS on it. Picking up some calipers and rotors tonight. so will see if they are correct. Going to have them pull up the brake lines while im at the store to see if they look like mine or not. Looks like the left line is the same on all of them, but the right line is different based off part descriptions. Advanced auto has a nice cyber Monday deal . $50 off $100 and pretty much 25% off everything else. So picked up a Battery for my car for $56 ($50 off) and brake calipers/rotors for 25% off each item. Now to figure out bending my own lines or ordering prebent lines from Circle Track (EGRbrakes).

Planetb. It won't state "ABS". It will state "rear wheel anti lock"-or words to that effect. It confused me too. So, I also verified it with the dealer using the serial number over the phone. It may make a difference in your choice of rotors.

Only two things on the label got my attention. It has a code "BGJ Brakes - Pwr Disc". This matches the FSM code for Rear ABS. Only other thing I see is "Anti slip diff" listed. I am actually going to the dealer to pickup some oil filters for my daily driver (I only use Mopar filters on it) and will ask the parts guy or the tech writer if he can take a look for me.

On my 1998.5 the hood sticker gives me a lot more information. Once looking at this, I called the parts department of my local dealer who, after looking at the VIN, confirmed that I have rear anti-lock only. Good luck.
