Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) head gasket problems?

Has anyone seen this before ? I have ABS and Brake lights on dash with no speedo or A/C . At first it was intermittent . Seemed like if i started the truck too soon without letting it go through all the self -tests it would do it . Now no matter how long I wait to start it is always doing it .

Thanks for any help .

Mine is doing the aiebag and no cruise control thing. I think it has something to do with the innerworkings in the steering wheel/column.

Not sure about your speedo.

There was a recall 5 or so years ago concerning the clock-spring. It affected the ABS light and cruise control. I would try replacing the speed sensor in the rear axle. It is a Halo pickup and can be bought for about 35 bucks. If you want you can inspect the connections to the unit to see if there are any defective links and clean the sensor.

I'll try to see if my cruise control works tomorrow . It looks like everything else is working , even the tachometer . Does the tach get it's signal from the alternator like the old cars used to ? Does anybody know why the airbag light would stay on also ?

Thanks guys! I'll check my maintenance manual tomorrow and see if there's any kind of resistance check I can do on that rear axle sensor . Maybe I'll get lucky and just find the sensor connector dirty . I still can't figure out why the A/C wouldn't be coming on . I can hear the compressor clutch engaging but I have no fan or cold air like there's no vacuum to actuate the HVAC .

You have a bunch of separate problems.

ABS and no speedometer is about the speed sensor on the rear diff. Since the sensor generates pulses the resistance doesn't mean anything. Cleaning the connector has worked for me.

The airbag light could be all sorts of things including sensors and the control module but the clockspring is a place to start.

The A/C uses vacuum for the recirculation blend door and there should be cold air even without vacuum.

Does anybody know what's common between the ABS - Airbag - Speedo ,and HVAC besides possibly the Powertrain control module ? I am positive that all these symptoms manifested themselves all at once . It's hard to believe they all went bad together by consequence . I finally got under my truck and cleaned the rear axle sensor and checked resistance at 1800 ohms . I also did the instrument cluster check and it threw a code 950 ( cluster not receiving ABS lamp on message from anti-lock brake controller ) . I couldn't find any thing in my maintenance manual about the clockspring . Where is it and what does it do ?

The clockspring is a spiral wound wire harness (like a clockspring) in the steering wheel. It connects the stationary steering column to the switches and crap in the rotating steering wheel.

A bad ground can do all sorts of strange things so inspecting and tightening up the grounds under the dash can't hurt.

LVJUNIOR - I was afraid somebody would mention that . Did you try a reflash of the PCM first ? How much did the PCM cost you ? Did you have the dealer replace it or did you do the job yourself ? What exactly were your symptoms ?

Well , it wasn't the rear axle sensor . I'm taking it to the dealer tomorrow and hoping for the best . I'll post the results .

DBLAKE,

Sorry for the late response, I don't get to a computer much. I do not know how much the PCM cost. The previous owner paid for it to be replaced at a local shop. We did change the rear axle sensor first to no avail.

After replacing the PCM you will need to go to the stealership and have the vin number flashed into the PCM. My ABS light was on because it thought I had 4-wheel ABS. After flashing the correct VIN all was well.

If you look around here enough you will find a lot of other posts about the PCM causing havik with the guages, overdrive, and A/C.

Hope this has helped

I f you need an PCM do a google search for remanufactured car computers. I got one for my daughter car, it came w/lifetime warranty and already flashed for her car. I would give you the link but don't have it any longer. I remember it was in Fla.

Thanks for all the help you guys . The mechanics at the dealer diagnosed it to be a bad ignition switch module . They said they wiggled it around with the key inserted and the lights on the dash would flash . Replaced the switch and all is well again , except for the $300 missing from my wallet . At least it was cheaper than the PCM .
