ABS Light just came on and won't go off what should I look for ? I am not electrically inteligent either !!!!

I just picked it up at the driveline shop and they had to jump as the batteries were dead could they have done something it wasn't on when I dropped it off :(

I'm assuming that you have a 3/4 ton and not a 1 ton dually. I have a dually and my light was on. Common problems: bad abs sensor somewhere, especially the rear. I think it should read 1 ohm, any more and it's bad. I had rear brake drums out of adjustment and it ruined the drum on one side. It was grabbing and setting off the light. Check the adjustment of your rear drums, and any possible vacuum leaks if your truck has the vacuum system. Mine is a 96' so not sure how relevant this is. The drums are very expensive on the duallys btw. Don't let them go.

Hello

Could be something the shop did, anything is possible. However in my experience when the ABS light comes on it is usually a faulty connection at the rear wheel speed sensor or a faulty speed sensor itself.

Hope this helps

I didn't think about the speed sensor I just put a 271 T-Case in and there is no place to plug in the sensor as there is so spedo gear in the 271. You think that might be it ?

What year truck? 96/97 has the sensor in the rear end on top center, sometimes pulling it and cleaning it will fix it

Yes, I am willing to bet that your problem is there.

I had this issue on mine and it was the speed sensor, but if you have yours unhooked then how would the ABS get an input? Does the ABS have a fuse(circuit breaker) if so then pull it and see if anything changes. When mine went bad it affected the speedo too though.

I don't remember what year your truck is but some years need both the speed signals from the diff sensor and trans/transfer case. Both go to the

cab(controller antilock brake)module where the signals are processed. The instrument cluster must receive a light off signal to extinguish the warning lamps. The default position for most warning systems is on and must receive a signal to turn off.

What about his ABS sensor on the front axle? I had my ABS light come on the day I went to get some new pads, rotors and calipers put on and the tech there said my sensor that pics up the teeth on the ring on the front passenger side axle shaft was loose and caused the light to come on. He was also curious as to why I only had one ABS ring on one side of the axle. I told him it had always been like that, apparently mine was the first truck he had ever seen with only one ABS ring on the axle??

I had the same problem with my 96 i read some place it sould reset itself after 50 on/off ign. key cycles but mine never did. I ended up replacing the sensor in the rear

axle, disconected the batteries, hooked them back up and it has not come on since

Okay I don't believe vacuum has a thing to do with it, but I think it is basically because its not sensing any speed from speedo, the plug that hooks to the spedo gear is not plugged in, and can't be, as there is no speedo gear in the new 271 t-case. Anybody know were I get an aftermarket speed sensing device that might be capatable.

Thanks guys

If your brake and abs lights come on after a lot of stop and go, and your braking effort is increased. It could be vacuum related.

I had abs and brake lights come on before when I switched the AC control from fresh to recirculate. Put it back on fresh and it stopped showing a problem. Got to looking around under the hood and found some bad vacuum connections. Got some vacuum hose and connectors at the parts store and resolved the problem. For a few years.

Good Luck

VSS Signal

I just researched this for a guy in the 911 forum. Prior to 98 (I did not look to see how far back this applies) the system used inputs from the Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) that was located in the transfer case tail section (or transmission tail section on 2WDs) as an input for the Controller Anit-lock Brake computer (CAB) and additionally the CAB used the signal off the rear differential as inputs. Note the VSS input is also fed to the PCM via the CAB on the truck to provide speed input for auto transmission control and well as speed control functions associated with the PCM. There are different systems and CABs for trucks with 2 wheel anti lock brakes vs 4 wheel anti lock brakes as I understand it. I'm not sure how you can regain the input. Late 91s had a signal generator that was put in the speedometer cable to provide this input. Can you take the tail piece off a 241 and install it on a 271? Good Luck Ken Irwin

I had the same problem with my 96 4x4 . Turned to be vacum leak at the cruise control modual under the left side battery. Those plastic cook and get real brittle, then the slitest movement and their broken. Check all your lines before you replace your senser.

I had the same problem...

The vacuum hose on my cruise control broke and that caused the brake and ABS light to stay on until I fixed it. A problem like this can drive you crazy! But the fix is usually simple. Check all of the vacuum hoses.
